About
Sesta di Sopra is a 60-hectare farm dating back to the 1200's and located south of Montalcino, about 4 km from Castelnuovo dell'Abate in Tuscany, the ancient land of the Etruscans. The farmhouse and surrounding properties were acquired in 1980 by the Spina Family, who restored the farmhouse, once a watch tower, as well as the two-hectacre olive grove to its current state. The farm's location is extremely favourable for olive and grape production, thanks to the soil composition and microclimate. The vineyards, which are maintained using the most modern agricultural techniques, are of particular importance to the family - run business.

Wow wow wow. What a passion this family has and what a love for wine and people. We went here without an appointment just to maybe taste a bit and buy a bit of wine. We were immediately invited into their home and given a tour around the cellars. Walked away with an amazing experience, a smile on our faces and allot of good wine. LOVE IT. keep doing what you’re doing.

A Highlight!
Oct 2019 • Couples
What a joy to meet the owner & wife who provide a personalized introduction to their wines and production facilities. Their grandson Matteo (22) guided us through the entire process from harvesting to fermentation to aging and bottling. So interesting to learn and such friendly and welcoming people! We didn't want the big crowded tours - instead we wanted get to know a authentic small family vineyard. This one is written about in wine journals and has achieved awards. It is a highlight not to be missed!

One of our favorite and most memorable parts of our trip to Italy!
Aug 2018
Our visit to Sesta Di Sopra took place 3 days ago where we took part in a tour and tasting. We typically like to email wineries a few weeks in advance to check for availability and arrange a time that is suitable for them. However, in this particular instance we did not. It was our last day in Italy, we had visited some wineries in the area a few days prior, and we had loved the region and wines so much we decided to see if we could squeeze one last winery visit in before we departed back home (and we are so glad that we did). We decided to call Saturday afternoon to see if they could squeeze us in with just an hour or two notice and we were in luck!

Ettore (the owner and winemaker himself) was our guide throughout the experience. He explained all of the wines, wine making process, and history of the winery passionately and in great detail. Ettore and his wife Enrica invited us into their home and we tasted some of the best Brunello wine we have ever had right at his their dining room table. This is not your typical winery visit by any means (and that is a very good thing).

Sesta di Sopra is recognized as one of the top Brunello producers year over year by nearly every wine publication possible (as they should be) and operates out a very humble and very beautiful location situated in a nearly perfect terroir for the region.

Enrica and Ettore we thank you again for the amazing experience and for being not only one of our highlights for our visit to Montalcino but for being a highlight of our entire trip to Italy and treating us like family.

Grazie mille!!!

P.S. They also produce some of the best grappa we have ever tried! :)

Dear "Wine LOVERS" Thank you for taking the time to write a review and for your kind words. I'm happy to know you enjoyed your time at Sesta. It was a pleasure to receive and try to share with you our emotions and experience in the production of wine. Our fantastic "Sangiovese", that is typical of this area and has been grown with the respect of the territory, it is able to give strong emotions that you feel during your taste. We try to translate the local culture, the centenarian experience, all the elements that characterize the "terroir" - land, microclimate, agronomic techniques, but above all respect for the environment. We are waiting for you again! Ettore & Enrica

Gracious hosts, fantastic setting, wonderful wine...
Jul 2018
Stopped in Montalcino for a short get away from Rome. Our hosts recommended Sesta di Sopra in their list of favorite wineries to visit. Very glad they did. Ettore answered my email immediately and was kind enough to answer many more questions other than wine so I knew having enough time for only one stop that this would be it. So worth it! This lovely couple take so much pride in their vineyard and home which they welcome you into for the tasting. Tucked into the hill surrounded by woods, it is a beautiful spot. During the tour we learned so much about the intricacies of producing brunello and roso di montalcino. It was the best part of our trip. We can't wait to open a bottle now that we are home.
Ettore e Enrica, grazie tante! Proprio una bella esperienza!

Welcome to Sesta di Sopra
Sep 2017 • Couples
We showed up at the third stop of a guided tour of Brunello wines. Ettore and Enrica welcomed us into their home. This winery, shepherded by a former bank president and his Good Wife, is an overwhelming look back through time. Whether it's Ettore's gentle explanations of how wine is produced, how each wine is special, etc. Or, the very fact you're in a home, constructed from a 13th century guard tower, occupied by a couple near their 80's, and built on an Etruscan village. It proves we are only stewards of this land, only here because others before have made it possible.

We can't say more about the wines that hasn't been said. What part of "top 100 winemakers in the world" is difficult to understand? If that's not enough, you know how much this craft means to this lovely couple when you are shown the bottles in the cellar, one for each grandchild, to be opened when they graduate college or get married -- whichever comes first.

If you're Brunello fans (like us) or hopeless romantics (like us) or both, don't miss this experience on your visit to Montalcino. In fairness, this was the first day of our 26th year together.

Thanks for your hospitality, E & E. We'll remember it always.

Top winemaker with familiar touch
Jul 2017 • Friends
We were on a drive through Montalcinos hills, plan was to visit some wineries and maybe find some bottles of the Brunello to bring home. We had already visited a few places, but not found the true favourite yet. The map showed us to Sesta di Sopra, we had read about them somewhere so we decided to make an unannounced stop here.
We were welcomed by Ettore, a friendly man with a warm smile. He invited us in to the building, it turned out to be right in their home, he placed us all four around their dining table right in the livingroom, and his wife served us with glasses and snacks. If we ever had any worries that this presentation should mean language difficulties, we were quickly calmed because Ettore spoke excellent english!
He began with his story about switching from a bankjob to become a winemaker. "This is our second life" he said full of joy. We then tried out the Rosso, had a nice and interesting tour in the winecellar and all was well explained by Ettore, and as grand finale we tasted the famous Brunello, price awarded in several magazines and in our opinion on of the best (actually THE best) we have tasted here in Montalcino!
Hours flied away, we were so well taken care of and well entertained with stories from winemaking and the family anecdotes. Of course we took the chance to buy some bottles to bring home to Sweden, and when we in the future will come back to Tuscany, Sesta di Sopra is a given place to visit!

Best part of our trip!
Jun 2017 • Couples
We had the pleasure of meeting Ettore and Enrica a few years ago and had told everyone how much we enjoyed our tasting with them. We came back this year with eight friends who all wanted to meet them after hearing our story. We visited again last week and they all were just as impressed as we were. The wine is incredible, but it's your hosts who make it so special. Truly my favorite part of our trip (again)!!

Elegant wine presented by very elegant hosts!
May 2016 • Couples
We were very lucky that our lovely hostess at Castel Brunello recommended a wine tasting at Sopra di Sesta. Ettore and Enrica are an elegant and charming couple who produce some very elegant and charming wines. Their Brunello is exquisite and we can't wait for our shipment to arrive so we can dive into some. We were delighted to be able to see their lovely home and enjoy their wines right at their dining room table. Their property is beautiful, their wines delicious, but the highlight of the tasting was meeting this wonderful couple who have been married 53 years. Make sure to ask Ettore to show you his Lamborghini!

This si the best wine tasting experience in Tuscany. The tasting is in the owners beautiful 12th century home. Th wine is truly spectacular. The tastings is given by the owners who are a lovely couple who celebrated their 50th anniversary.
It is completed out of a commercial experience, but you feel having the best wines ever as part of a warm family.
