Came across this wonderful place on a wet Sunday with friends and discovered one of the most wonderful museums we have ever visited. Located in a historic house in the centre of this beautiful town we were greeted with a genuine friendly welcome and given a guide to what we can discover within this unique building. Not only does this museum have a wonderful to story to tell about the town, it's people and its connection with the Hansa network as well as the fishing industry but it also has an amazing calendar of arts and cultural events. Although at the time when we visited they were between exhibitions, it clearly attracts the very best and has given us reason to come back again soon.

Although many towns in Holland close up on a Sunday, if you are looking for a wonderful cultural, enlightening and enjoyable place to go then this is it.

We couldn't believe that entry was only one Euro per person. This has to be best value that one Euro could ever buy!

Thank you Stadsmuseum!

Old and new mixed. A bit of a mismatch. Some installations did not work ('defect') and most were outdated with technology from decades ago. Step it up please. The photo exhibition was the best plus the exhibit on the Belgian camp.

If one is looking at getting a historic perspective of Herderijk the Stadsmuseum is the place for you.Rather forebearing and somewhat stern as museums go, the only saving grace is the occasional special exhibition as the Photographic display we saw when we visited.
There is a Tourist Information Office right next door which is helpful.

Very nice small museum, with temporarily exhibitions (when I was there about De Stijl, famous Dutch art group with amongst others Mondriaan) and their own exhibition about the history of Harderwijk. The museum is very nice decorated. Enough space, very kind and helpful workers, a lovely small restaurant in the garden and a fine shop with books and other small souvenirs. You pay a small fee. You won't be disappointed. By the way, the coffee is good too!

Interesting museum, not too expensive for entree. People were pleasant. Not to large so well able to not get bored. Nice little garden at the back.

The ANWB sign on the facade taught us that the building was built in Louis 16th style and that the museum originally consisted of two houses. In 1630, an inspector from De Munt lived in the left house and a baker lived in the right house. In 1793, both houses were combined into one mansion. In 1950, the municipality of Harderwijk bought the building on the condition that a museum would be established there. The Veluws Museum for Antiquities was opened here in 1952 and was renamed the City Museum in 2000. Started on the ground floor with a well-intentioned but somewhat counterintuitive (mainly because of the over-the-top acting) introductory film. The aim of the film was to tell the history of Harderwijk in a nutshell. After the film we entered a room with an abundance of objects, a cacophony of sounds and interactive displays. Maybe fun for children, but it didn't interest us. The permanent exhibition showing the history of Harderwijk and the surrounding area is located on the first and second floors. Attractive and quietly designed spaces, interesting pieces and concise and easy to read information signs. I especially liked the parts about the orphans and the (then very renowned) university. Furthermore, work by photographer Daniëlle van Zadelhoff can be seen until May 26, 2024. Due to the use of strong light-dark contrast, her portraits resemble paintings by old masters such as Rembrandt and Rubens. Beautiful and impressive work. Interesting artist, also special that she only started photography at a later age.

A small city museum that tells the history of Harderwijk.
Not really anything worth mentioning or paintings. The presentation about the Belgian camp was the most impressive.
Unfortunately it was too busy on Sunday. All audio devices had already been taken, so the audio tour was not possible, a disappointment.
The Jan van Haasteren exhibition was informative. Unfortunately, it was too busy with too many parents with kids, which caused a lot of noise and made it difficult for me to concentrate on the informative texts to be read.

We went to the City Museum during museum night. You can learn many things about the history of Harderwijk here. The Jan van Haasteren exhibition is also very nice to visit. Especially with children.

When we visited the Marius van Dokkum museum, we were tipped off about the Jan van Haasteren exhibition in the City Museum.
The museums are within walking distance of each other and because you get a discount with the ticket to the Marius van Dokkum museum, we decided to visit. A good tip!

There is a section on the history of Harderwijk, which is also interesting in itself. Jan van Haasteren's exhibition covers the other "half" of the museum. It provides some background information about Jan himself and about his drawings and puzzles that are hilarious and chaotic at the same time.
For example, in each puzzle there are a series of fixed figures and elements, many of which we knew but some of which we did not, fun and educational.

Worth visiting!
