Happened upon this museum at the end of the day. I wish we could have spent more time. It has a wide range of exhibits on various topics, all interesting - including a short video on the Dickens connection to the area, and a walk-through reproduction of a "hulk" (prison ship). It is more extensive that you would expect, and... More

Last Sunday went to the Dickensian Day in Rochester, it was good but a bit chilly, so we thought we would have a look at the Museum, having remembered it from some years ago. Its still as good with excellent representations of inside a ship. Also the history of theater in the Rochester area as well as general history with... More

This museum is in two buildings next door to each other and on three floors, I didn't see any lifts but there may have been lifts somewhere discreetly tucked away. The first building had the prison hulk in it and interesting exhibits about prisoners and their bone and straw work, that was an eye opener for me, the work was... More

As I am a tour guide, I find this museum is ideal to visit to update my own information to pass onto my guests. So much local information, and such friendly staff, always there to answer questions.

We arrived in Rochester on a pretty damp and dismal day. We bought a leaflet from the tourist board on Dickens and Rochester and followed the map around. As the day progressed it started raining and we stumbled on the Guildhall Museum. We spent a couple of hours here wandering around the rooms and exhibits - all of them free,... More

Well worth dropping in as the museum is free and has a wide array of displays from local history, Charles Dickens to prison hulks and Victorian rooms. Interesting and worth visiting for 40 to 45 mins if you're here to see the castle or cathedral anyway.
