Istanbul and the islands are increasingly host to Muslim visitors and less to Western tourists. Christians are facing ever more inclement conditions in the Levant. Gracious little local churches testify to a more tolerant time than now.

Must see if you're on Buyukada. Take the phaeton up and down. 40TRY each way, or thereabouts, from the hop on/off just up from the ferry piers. The last part up is steep and a walk. Take water and a hat if it's a hot...More

If you are visiting Buyukada you should definitely visit. It is almost an hour by walking from the centrum. If you prefer to go by phaeton it only takes 15 minutes. You have to climb almost 900 meters (that was the hardest part) on foot.

This is a legendary church where it is believed that miracles still happen - women who cannot get pregnant have to walk up the steep hill as a pilgrimage, with one condition. Must not utter one word for as long as they go up!
