Built in 1759, Helmsley Walled Garden is a five acre garden sitting beneath the imposing ruins of Helmsley Castle. It provided the vegetables, fruit and flowers for the table of Duncombe Park until just after World War 1 when it was leased as market garden. Abandoned after it closed its doors for the final time in 1984, it fell into dereliction. Restoration started in 1994 and since then the Garden has gone from strength to strength through the dedication and care of staff and volunteers.

Visitors can now enjoy restored glasshouses full of colour, a double herbaceous Hot Border running the length of the Garden or sit and enjoy the tranquillity of the Garden of Contemplation. A Clematis Garden showcases over 100 different clematis varieties and in the vegetable patch, a new attraction is the edible flower garden, showing some of the flowers that can bring new colour and style to salads and other dishes.

Vegetables and fruit from the Garden go into the delicious dishes prepared in the Vinehouse Cafe. Visitors sit beneath Victorian vine cultivars to enjoy soups, salads and open sandwiches as well as delicious cakes and desserts.

The Plant Centre sells a wide selection of herbaceous perennials, some of which visitors will find on display in the Garden. Staff can help visitors with any questions about what might go well in their gardens. The Garden shop also sells a range of useful garden sundries such as gloves, string and seeds as well as gifts such as jams, chutneys and biscuits. Other items available include a range of heritage tools and garden artefacts.

The Garden also works as a social enterprise, providing social and therapeutic horticulture to people with a wide range of difficulties and disabilities. Specialist therapists provide a structured environment for supported volunteers to gain skills and self-confidence whilst undertaking horticultural tasks in a safe environment.

There is full wheelchair access to the Garden as well as the Cafe.

What a disappointment. In one word scruffy. We realise that at this time of year it is between seasons but what there was was very untidy. We met two volunteers who were friendly and we had a chat. They mentioned the head gardener as over to the right. When we got over there didn't even look up. (Doesn't cost anything... More

I saw the walled garden from a little distance whilst visiting Helmsley Castle. It looked moderately interesting so we thought we would have a look. However, when we got to the entrance, peeked in and found it costs £7.50 per person to enter, we walked away. We were not the only ones to do the same. So, whilst this is... More

A beautiful peaceful place to walk round and enjoy. We have visited on a number of occasions at different times of year and love to see the changes each time we go. The hens are a nice touch as well and I can never come away without buying something from the plant shop!

Don't miss visiting here, it's lovely. There's so much to see and the special breed chickens are simply a delight.

We whiled away a few hours in this garden. Dogs are allowed. And the entrance fee allows you to make a return visit for free. This allows you to visit in the different seasons.

Understandably lacking in some colour at the moment, April '17, but half price because of this! Still a wonderful place to wander around, twice! Lovely cafe with vines growing inside the roof and umbrellas to catch the grapes! Excellent food with good, efficient, friendly service. Dogs, on leads, allowed everywhere except deep inside the cafe. They can go in the... More

Lovely variety of plants and chickens BUT admission price of £7.50 each is way too expensive . They did have a short term offer of 2 for 1 due to spring not yet sprung. If they reduced it to £4 or even £5 they would get so many more people in. There was hardly anyone in the walled garden itself... More

On this occasion we didn't go into the gardens as it's a bit too early in the year. Four of us enjoyed a near perfect lunch. The food was delicious and the setting superb. There are lots of new tables and chairs this year so we had no trouble getting a lovely table overlooking the garden. The cafe ran out... More

What a great place and such a great charity. We called in and had a few hours wondering round this hidden gem of garden. Nice to be able to go to garden like this with our dog too. As its all done by volunteers some odd bits are a little in need of a bit of weeding. But the its... More

Thank you for your review and very pleased you will be returning. The gift aid element allows our visitors to see the garden throughout the year seeing how different parts are at their best at different times. With five acres of flowers and vegetables there will always be weeding to undertake. We pride ourselves at being a working garden and... More
