The castle is interesting and the audio tour gives a good description of the history. Following our visit to the castle we had lunch in Helmsley and then walked the 3 miles to Rievaulx Abbey which is also owned by English Heritage (we are members!). The walk took us about 1hr 15m each way with our 8 year old and... More

Wonderful Castle surrounded by attractions including Duncombe Park,The National Birds Of Prey Centre and the lovely The Walled Gardens of Helmsley. The Town has recently won the Best Market Town in Britain Award and has a new Town Crier who was prominent in the Movie & international Trailer of Dads Army. Plenty to Shout About !

I always like English Heritage sites. They're educational as well as spectacular. Shame about lack of wheelchair access

I had often put off going to this castle because I had thought there was little to see but when I visited it last week I found it to be much more impressive than I expected. You can have a free audio guide at the entrance and then you walk around it by yourself. The history of it is far... More

Vistited Helmsley castle as part of hike. Spent about an hour touring the castle which was made more interesting by listening to the audio guide, which was really informative and pointed out things that i would have missed. Beautifully kept ruin but limited wheelchair access. Approximately 2.5 mile hike to Rievaulx Abbey

... like many others. A little, but complete, museum in a restored part of the castle remains, not accessible for wheelchairs: they have to stay out on a well kept lawn with enough benches to rest a while and enjoy the site. It's English Heritage, complete with new reception-shop with free tasting of local produce, a nice detail. Parking is... More

Whilst we have visited Helmsley many times never called into the castle and we have missed a trick. If you have children great place to take them and you can while away a good couple of hours with them. It's dog friendly ( could do with a few more litter/ dog poo bins please) and we though ally enjoyed the... More

You can get audio free of charge which was great lot of information about the castle. For a small place lot to see and read about it.

Interesting castle to visit alongside Helmsley. Audio guide gives you and the kids some backdrop and the museum inside the castle is well worth a look . Fascinating to see the cannon balls found inside the grounds and how the men at arms were kitted out. Also when we visited not too busy so you don't feel like you are... More

Nice day out and some interseting items on display inside which was welcome whilst it rained. Nice town and surrounding area, well worth a visit.
