"Mouse House" Castle along the Rhine

Built in 1117 to protect the town of Braubach and the only castle on the Rhine that was never destroyed. Spectacular view of the Rhine from this 12th century fortress. It's quite... read more

Built in 1117 to protect the town of Braubach and the only castle on the Rhine that was never destroyed. Spectacular view of the Rhine from this 12th century fortress. It's quite a walk up the hill so wheelchair access is not possible. Sturdy shoes and strong legs are necessary and it's well worth the hike to see the Medieval... More

The tour cost 7 euros for 15-20 min. You cannot visit the castle alone, the guide could speak in English and does not do because doesn't want (we were in a group with 10 people and just 02 German speakers), if you spend few minutes more to take a picture without nobody, so then the guide came and ask your... A nice walk uphill to get to the castle, the only romantic Rhine castle that has never been destroyed. Visit with guided tour. Has a museum shop and restaurant. Great view around braubach. If you are interested in history, visit the antiquariat bookshop with medieval book prints and manuscripts. A real treasure trove. The guided tour is about one hour.

A must see real castle with a huge old iron key to unlock the door for our tour. A lot of uneasy steps and rocks so west good hiking shoes for this tour. Suits of armor, beautiful chapel, farrier/blacksmith area. Great views of the Rhine river from way up high! Go see!!

Fortunately, we decided to visit the Marksburg Castle on our drive to the southern portion of the Rhine. This castle is exactly what you want to see--ancient, history and not refurbished (much). It's perched high up the western bank of the Rhine has canon's aimed across the river and the tour is relatively inexpensive.

We had a private tour, followed by a medieval feast. A really fun and informative evening. The castle is just lovely - and I'm glad its not 'like the movies' - this is real history! The walking is very uneven though - both leading up to and within the castle itself. The medieval feast was also really good, with excellent... More

The Marksburg Castle is one of the very few that did not see damage from the successions of rulers nor the World Wars. Fully intact, it is a gem to behold! The only way to truly learn of life in the castle is through a guided tour. In this way, the guide was able to bring to life the experience... More

On our way into the castle the first thing we learned from the tour guide was about the many ways a castle defense system can be breached. It was very interesting to see the once castle on the Rhine that survives in its original state. No matter how many other castles you have seen, it is worth your time to... More

We visited the Marksburg Castle while on a river cruise. I was an amazing tour, but I found the castle to be unlike what we see in the movies. As I recall, they said the castle was home to just over a dozen people. The entry ramp into the castle was very steep and uneven. The ramp offers difficult walking... More

We visited as part of an organised cruise tour. Not recommended if you are not steady on your feet as there are stairs and quite a bit of uneven ground. It is interesting to see how others lived once upon a time.
