The area offers so much variety from the superb wineries to the rugged beauty of the landscape. The 4WD tracks take you to places you never thought existed, providing an insight into the life of the early gold miners. The lakes also offer many activities including fishing. The snow fields are so close and accessible, this place has it all.

I stayed in Queenstown a total of 3 nights recently and the made a return trip to Dunedin on the Eastt Coast, travelling Route 8 to Dunedin and the 'pig route' 85 back. Central Otago is stunning this time of year. I travelled throu g and stopped at Roxburgh, Ranfurly, Omakau and Alexandra in the round trip. I didn't have... More

This is a laid back area full of rich gold mining history, wineries from small to large featuring a whole lot of choices, scenery from canyons, lakes, mountains and bonus very warm people that really cater to tourism and appreciate tourism as a business (unlike the more touristy areas of Queenstown)

This area of NZ is famed for its wonderful wineries growing Pinot Noir and Riesling. Also it was the site of a great explosion of gold mining and a lot of that history still exists. The lakes, countryside and mountains make this area a stunning place to visit.

Cromwell has a rich history of 19th Century gold mining. Unfortunately the bulk of the old historic town was submerged by the Clyde dam in the 1970's however there is still a remnant of historic buildings that are well worth visiting. Panning, sluicing and dredging for gold brought forth amazing wealth to the local community. Now orchards, vineyards and farming,... More

Central Otago is beautiful to drive through and has incredible Pinots. Definitely worth stopping by a winery or two, especially if you like a more complex Pinot, in the Burgundy style. Had the best time at the Amisfield Cellar Door. The location is beautiful, staff friendly and incredibly knowledgeable, and delicious wine.
