Castello Sonnino is one of the few untouched dwellings in Tuscany and is strategically situated in the village of Montespertoli : only 20 km from Florence on the ancient and beautiful Etruscan road to Volterra . It is part of the Italian Historical Dwelling Association ( ADSI ).

Castello Sonnino, which previously belonged to the Machiavelli 's , was purchased by the Baron Isacco Sonnino at the beginning of the 19th century , is composed by different architectural structures, where the oldest parts are the XIII century Tower and the Chapel ( now one of the Castle's apartments ) .The main building , the

" Villa " , dated from the XVI century still contains the historical Archives of the Prime Minister Barone Sidney Sonnino with all the documents regarding the First War World , the Treaty of Versailles and his Library.

Castello Sonnino is now the home of the Baron Alessandro e Baroness Caterina de Renzis Sonnino .

In the premises it's also located an Enoteca with a Restaurant which is open everyday from 9 am to 8 pm . We daily offer wine tastings with tours of the Winery included the monumental cellars, light lunches, dinners, and tours of the Castle and the Tower. Better to book in advance.

Starting from Spring 2014, besides the flat in the Tower (2 double bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, living room and kitchen), we can offer to our guests more accomodation in the newly restored apartments of the Winemaker and Farmhouse. Both furnished in the local country style of last century, using only antique furnitures coming from the old rooms of the castle.

In the Farmhouse: three bedrooms, two bathrooms, very big kitchen with big old fireplace, and sitting room. Large private garden where is possible to relax in the shade of the Tower.

The Winemaker apartment: three double bedrooms with three bathrooms and kitchen. Terrace with breathtaking view of the Montespertoli valley with the Sonnino vineyards. In front of the terrace is the old "Aia" of the winery where is possible to relax and enjoy a great Chianti sunset.

We visited the Castello with a tour group whose organizer has a relationship with the owners. We enjoyed a special lunch and wine tasting as well as a fantastic tour led by the Baroness. We saw the inner workings of the winners as well as the castle and grounds. It was a highlight of our tour of Tuscany. I took... More

We had a delicious lunch here and wine tasting! The lunch itself was very good and excellent value for money! The wines were very tasty and well presented by one of the waitresses working there, we ended up buying 2 of them. We concluded the experience with a tour of the castle grounds and cellars with the Lovely Alice, she... More

Very much enjoyed the wine tour here (though we have little to compare it to as it was our first). The staff were welcoming and quite knowledgeable. The tour involved a look at the cellar with three different methods of wine storage (cement barrels for young/simpler wines, large wooden barrels for more complex aged ones, and small wooden barrels for... We had a wine tasting with 4 wines + food and a tour afterwards. We started with a white wine, continued by 3 red wines and a dessertwine as final! There were great, especially the dessertwine (35 euros per 0,375L). The snacks and food were tasty. The tour was nice.. Explanation was great. I would def recommend this :).

The staff was very knowledgeable about the wine and the history of the Castle. We sat outside in the quiet garden and enjoyed the wine, olive oil, bread, water and of course the wine. A pleasant afternoon on Tuscany.

The wine tasting was a bit disappointing. Although you can buy many different wines, you only get to try three of their least interesting ones during the tasting. The wine was paired with some unappealing appetizers that we would have gladly traded in for some better wines. We wont be coming back...

Had a lovely time with family and friends last year at this winery. We did a tour and the guide was very knowledgeable. The wine was very good. Especially the dessert wine - is there a way to order that from the US? I would love to purchase more and buy another for my friend as a reminder of our... More

Lovely old castle full of history. In addition to an interesting history, a visit here is also an opportunity to learn about local food, wine and culture - and the development of sustainable agro-tourism and educational programming. The staff are knowledgeable and helpful. Well worth the visit and a nice break from the relentless tourism that has consumed Tuscany.

Our friend arranged a food/wine/tour package for us at this winery and it turns out to be very nice, despite the rainy weather. The cost is very reasonable and we had local Italian food to go with the 4 types of wine tasted. This is a very old winery and there are lots of history. It is like walking through... More
