I went through safely yesterday with my motorhome (2.8m) and wondered just how wide a vehicle could get through. That said I had no problem and the Tunnel is part of the Forgotten World Highway which is well worth doing

We travelled on the rail trail from Taumaruinui through to Whangamomona. I would recommend doing this section. The 20 tunnel tour is what we did. This route offers many different experiences. The guide was very knowledgeable with lots of stories to tell. The carts are...More

This is a brilliant stretch of road and experienced drivers will love it. The road also doubles as a heritage trail with stops at lookouts, bridges and tunnels that have information boards explaining the history of the area. The small village of Whangamomona is at...More

Drove this on a cloudy day. It seemed like a long tedious drive with none of the famed views visible because of the clouds. Best do this when you are fresh and have time.

This has to be the windiest road in NZ... narrow and twisty with plenty of hills and wild life roaming the edge... shingle stretch in middle for about 20km but despite the bends an enjoyable ride... take time to head up to ohura just 10km...More

The 20 tunnel trip from Whangamomona to Taumarunui was fun and the history of the area fascinating. Brett was a good host and looked after us really well. A scrumptious picnic lunch as well as morning and afternoon tea was included. We were lucky to...More

Great drive nothing like as complex as I thought it would be and the gravel bit is smooth and trouble free. Not as many viewpoints as I was hoping . Just a nice drive, don't worry take your time look at what you will.

Possibly depends on the difficulty. There are stops along the way and there are sleepers and gravel. Have a chat to the staff before booking they're v friendly and helpful.
