A pleasant surprise
Sep 2020
We discovered this archeological site by chance, as a road sign on our way called attention to it. The ruins of a late Roman villa sit under a farmhouse from the 1700s, it is a recent discovery (only 40 years ago ...), and the site has been subject to careful restoration and reconstruction, successfully safeguarding the Roman ruins as well as the more recent farm (only a couple of centuries old ...) . The result is very interesting, as both structures are clearly identified and partially displayed; in particular, the mosaics of the Roman villa are worth enjoying a good look at - not as extensive and complete as the ones in the Villa Romana del Casale of Piazza Armerina, nonetheless the result of skilled and talented workmanship. Access to the site is free, panels in the indoor area describe well the remains and the historical context, partially also in English. The staff on duty was very cordial and helpful. The visit was certainly worthwhile.

Worth the short drive from Noto !
Jan 2020 • Solo
Only a few minutes drive from Noto, this villa has some brilliant mosaics (not as grand as Villa Romana del Casale, but at least on par with Pompeii). Entrance was free (have never seen that before in Italy !), and no other tourists were there.

Magical Mosaics
Oct 2019
We were taken here as part of our Secret Sicily tour and our very knowledgeable guide told us all about these ancient scenes. I particularly like the tigers and was amazed at both the craftsmanship and the longevity of these wonderful mosaics.

It was going to rain all day, so we decided to pick a museum and spend an hour there. Didn't want to waste a day because of the weather, as our stay in Sicily is short. After an hour's drive with a baby and a toddler came to the locked door with the scribbled "because of the weather" note. Very disappointed.

Beautiful mosaics in the middle of nowhere

One of my favourites from a recent Siciliian holiday, a small museum displaying a few Roman walls and some really lovely mosaic floors showing hunting scenes: a tiger, men and animals wading through a stream, a feast... all beautifully executed in natural stone pieces. No shop, no entrance fee.

Well worth the short drive

The remains of the villa are set in countryside from which you can see Noto just beneath the mountain. The mosaics themselves are a bridge into a different time and they are awe inspiring.

DO NOT MISS

While it is only a small site and only takes around 15mins to look around it is well worth seeing. The mosaics are incredible with the added bonus being it is free!!

Don't miss it if you love ancient history.

This was definitely a highlight of our holiday in Sicily. Some of the most beautiful and complete Roman mosaics in the World, quite rightly a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Try to get there early, as we did, as coach parties rather swamp the walkways and ruin quiet contemplation of this atmospheric site. A late afternoon visit is a good alternative time to avoid the crowds.
Good facilities on site include toilets and a nice restaurant selling local produce. There are the usual tourist stalls but these are easily avoided and there is plenty of car parking, once you arrive. This is not the easiest place to get to from nearby Piazza Armerina ,we got very lost in the narrow one-way streets of the old town so try to arrive from the south.

Small, but interesting archeological site

Lovely Roman mosaics in a small, well-done museum. A tiny fraction of Villa Casale, but worth a stop.

A good place for a short visit

Usually, a free historical site. The mosaics are well displayed and have been well conserved. The site is excavated from under a later farmhouse, abandoned, some of that has been repaired. There are long and involved description boards in Italian. Apart from the mosaics, some of the foundations of the old Roman villa have been excavated. It would be nice to know more about those.
This is worth a visit on account of the mosaics.
