Big walk

A longish walk for us oldies, but well gravelled with lots of signage along the way explaining the history of the mine.

Arriving in Waihi from Paeroa by bike it was fun to do the Pit Rim Walkway. It gives you a dramatic overview of the mine and an interesting insight into the history of Gold Mining in the area. The mine is known as "Martha". It is situated directly above the town and easily accessed via the old Pump Station which... More

This is a nice scenic walk that takes in the mine as well as some bush area around it. There is one section the goes around the street due to a recent rock slip at the mine. You can read information along the way, the track is well signed and gravel covered so not too wet in the rain. 4km... More

Visited Sunday 4th September. Very interesting to see the Cornish Pump House and open cut mine, reading about the early history and if your feeling energetic you can walk around the outside of the open pit. My excuse for not doing the walk was I had a train to catch. Best part its all free to do.

Great walk around the pit rim, well maintained and planted, it takes about 50min to 1 hour depending on how quickly you want to walk with spectacular views of the open cast mine

At a leisurely pace you can be around the Pit Rim in an hour on foot. Or for the more adventurous take your bicycle, the path ways are well prepared with just one or two steep inclines. The walkway is family friendly with room for baby buggies and strollers. There are fences for your safety and informative signage along the... More

This was awesome to see. Looking at the trucks and how small/far away they are makes you realise how big the mine actually is. Awesome place to stop and see. and all free.

One big hole, one good long walk around the lip, loads of interesting information points well laid out, watch the rock carried out on wagons , do the organised trip to learn about Martha first. But remember it is just a ( very ) big hole.

We went to the area because my son loves rock hounding and we were hoping to gold pan. What we learned upon visiting the I-Site (information booth that each town has... was located across the road from this mine pit and inside the front of the Discovery Museum) is that you actually can't pan for gold in this area. The... More

3 minute walk from Tourist Information Centre n Waihi Town. Very picturesque with derelict Powerhouse just like Cornish Tin Mines. The many, many layers of rock in Mine itself constantly changing colour. Fabulous views in all directions. Well worth visit. FREE.
