Vaux le Vicomte is the creation of three men brought together by Nicolas Fouquet, Louis 14th's finance minister, the landcape architect Andre le Nôtre, the architect Louis le Vau and the painter-decorator Charles le Brun. The perfect harmony between architecture and landscape is the result of their collaborative genius. From its unveiling at the famous fête of august 17th, 1661, Vaux le Vicomte aroused the envy of the Sun King and became the model that inspired the whole of Europe, including Versailles.Vaux le Vicomte can be visited during the day or at night with 2000 candles (on Saturdays from may to beginning of october)Easy access by train or by bus from paris.

A very nice chateaux which is privatly owned and therefore a bit more of interest. The building itself is impressive as are the grounds.

This chateau came highly recommended and it was a treat. The architecture is its focal point and you are reminded to look at the many "innovations of the period." However, we found the chateau to be neglected. There were hardly any flowers in Spring, things were falling apart and looked unkempt. A lot of rooms were bare and you had... More

It's been on our list to visit for years. Once, years ago, we made it to the front gate, in the winter and in the snow, and kept driving. This year, we went in. It was all dressed up for the Christmas season. And yes, it's spectacular, but more impressive is its history (Fouquet, Vatel, Louis XIV and Le Vau,... More

The Chateau and grounds are magnificent. We were permitted to explore on our own throughout the Chateau. This is truly a "not-to-be-missed" experience just a short train ride from Paris. (Shuttle bus is available for transportation to the Chateau.)

We spend almost 3 hours visiting the Chateau and gardens, and still missed out on the Long Walk to view the Chateau from the big statue (Hercules?). If you watched the tv serial Versailles, you should know that Louis XIV based then expansion of his Chateau on this and imprisoned the owner Fouquet for embezzlement to pay Vaux-le-Vicomte. The views... More

We bought tickets for the Candlelit Evenings and we LOVED it! The chateau is breathtaking and you feel transported back in time with the grounds and chateau lit by candlelight. There was a very jovial, informal and fun atmosphere. It was not in the least a stuffy environment. I highly recommend Chateau Vaux le Vicomte!! It is a very easy,... More

My first visit to France happened this summer and we decided to spend a week in Paris! I was looking up things to do and there was a lot of opinion between going to Versailles or Chateau de Vaux-le-Vicomte. We decided, why choose? So we did both. Versailles is unparalleled. The sheer magnitude of its splendor is as alive as... More

This was our third year of going to Vaux-le-Vicomte for the candle lit garden and splendid dinner. It was fabulously romantic. I will have great memories of this event for the rest of my life. The food was good, but the ambiance/setting were ideal. They had terrific (unexpected) entertainment, which enhanced the experience even more. We will be back again... More

This stunning Chateau was one of the highlights of our honeymoon. As a huge James Bond fan, I initially was merely interested in a setting location, but it turned out to be one of our favourite days of our 3 weeks in France. Beautiful Chateau, gardens and grounds. Will definitely be visiting again.

Superb castle, excellent location, but we were not so impressed by the gardens. A huge space "furnished" with huge mirrors of water and huge green stripes. It's a must see in the big list of French castles, but be careful when you go because it's very crowded. We made the mistake of going into a holiday and stayed at a... More

Dear Visitor, We are very pleased that you enjoyed your visit! We were very successful among our visitors this year, which may explain the crowd during the Christmas holidays. If you want a classic tour of the estate, we recommend you not to come during our special events in order to enjoy a better visit of the Château and its... More
