I spent a couple of hours walking on the footpath along the cliffs. My observations were the following:
- The cable car ride to the top is a must, otherwise it will take a long time of trekking to reach the best views
You can trek up Mount Song if you are very fit, otherwise you can get to top via cable at a cost of ¥100 per trip. The view up the top is not that fantastic. Not worth sending the money to get to the top...More
There are many paths and stairs to hike up this wonderful mountain as well as 2 cable cars (50-80RMB) to get to the top. After visiting Shaolin, you can hike up to the Dharma Cave or one of the other peaks. Very nice day out.

Hi Sam, sorry I can't answer all your questions but the nearest town to Song Shan is Dengfeng (about a 20 min taxi ride away). Luoyang and Zhengzhou are bigger cities nearby, it takes about 1.5 hours to get there from both of them. If you want to spend a fair bit of time on the hike and see the Shaolin Temple too, I recommend staying the night in Dengfeng before or after.
