- KomatorBarcelona, Spain902 contributionsSimply breathtakingMount Bromo is one of the most famous volcanoes in Java, and it's truly impressive. You can visit on your own or join an organized tour. The prices for organized excursions are similar, and they all more or less follow the same itinerary: you'll need to wake up very early in the morning, leaving the hotel around 2:30-3am. You'll ride in a jeep to a viewpoint located on the outer rim of the volcano's caldera (Bromo is one of the volcanoes inside the Penanjakan caldera). From there, you'll witness the sunrise. The earlier you arrive, the less you'll have to walk from the jeep to the viewpoint. The views are spectacular, creating a lunar-like landscape that, as the sun rises, illuminates the volcanoes. It's truly breathtaking! Afterward, you'll descend in a jeep to a location near Mount Bromo. There, you'll find some shops and people offering horseback rides to the volcano. The walk is relatively easy, flat, and covers a couple of kilometers. Then, you'll climb up to the volcano, about 500 meters. However, everything is well-prepared, with stairs provided, making it not very challenging. Once you reach the top, you'll get to see the crater (when we were there, there were fumaroles and a smell of sulfur).Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 October 2023
- Oliver Tang136 contributionsMajestic mountainVisited here in November 2023 and stayed in Hotel Lereng Bromo.( a nearby hotel) Started out at 3am on a beautifully restored Toyota jeep to the sunrise view point. Already there were tourists but according to our guide, weekdays are ok but public holidays, huge crowds. So try not to come during those days. Able to see a volcano up close is sublime and awe-inspiring You see the steam spurting out and can even hear it hiss and growl too! The view of the volcano and crater from afar is beautiful and majestic with the mists swirling about. When ascend up the the rim, the view is scary and intimidating. Not suprising, that people worshipped this as a god But the road there is really winding. Those who are prone to motion sickness better be prepared! After the sunrise point, do go down to the desert/ crater view early before the horde. We were the first to arrived there and hence was spared the dust kicked up by tourists, horses and bikes You can either walk across the desert area ( about 0.6km ) or take a horse ride or bike. Didnt want to ride the horses at first, but felt sorry for the animals and the owners and was feeling lazy too. So took the ride, which cost IDR 100,000 per trip ( about 30 ringgit) which was reasonable. (Told the horse owner to make sure the horse gets fed, and dont pocket it all ) Thank goodness, I rode there, bcos on reaching the crater, there is a long exhausting flight of steps to the rim of the crater. Like i said, the view up here is awesome and intimidating. I threw the bouquet of dried flowers bought earlier at the foot of the stairs as a token of respect and thanks for a safe trip. My guide said the best time to come is in April, just after the rainy season when the surrounding desert is abloom with flowers and the view less desolate All in all a memorable visit.Visited November 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 13 November 2023
- TravelAusHo Chi Minh City, Vietnam715 contributionsEntrance fee is ridiculous, this is a way to see Bromo essentially for free. The view this morning was incredible! We hired a dirt bike in Malang and found a funny hill that has gone viral on Instagram etc. it worked out incredibly well as it bypasses the main gates to the national park, I don’t have an issue paying a fee but at 350k per head on a weekend is ridiculous. If you are comfortable on a bike I would suggest doing what we have done. Set your destination from Malang as mentigen hill and take the top route across through the town called Sugro, this will be the furthest in time, google maps shows 2 hours, you will come out halfway up the hill to the viewpoints, if you’re staying on the other side of bromo near mentigen hill you will have to cross the sea of sand, it is incredibly thick that side so take care. Hopefully this helps.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 November 2023

Visitors often wake up early to witness the sunrise over the caldera, with Mount Bromo and other surrounding peaks creating a dramatic and picturesque scene. - Irini LinBelfast, United Kingdom116 contributionsAmazing experienceThe trip was amazing. We start out at 1.30 to wait for the sunrise and after that we hiked to the crater of the volcano. It was amazing hearing the roaring of the earth. Walking along the crater was both thrilling and fantastic and words cannot describe my feelings of the experience. However, I would say spare the poor horses and refrain from riding them as they seemed to have difficulty in breathing. After all the path to the crater was not as challenging as one would have imagined.Visited February 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 29 February 2024
- ChelviGanesanIpoh, Malaysia127 contributionsA must visitWe were at the gathering point around 3am. Our guide asked us to wait a while, till around 4am to start going up to the sunrise point. It was around 10 minutes hike. The sky was full of bright stars. Since there were quite a number of people walking up, we didn't really managed to take many photos there. But once reaching the sunrise point, our guide took us to a particular spot and asked us to wait till sunrise and he will join us. The spot was amazing, and we were lucky to be earlier there. After the sunrise, we came down and moved to the crater. You can choose to walk or ride horses. The people around there depend on this as their income so we paid a little extra. Something I personally didn't mind since it was not only tiring for the horses but also to the horse handlers. Once you reach the foot of the mountain, you will need to climb up around 250 staircases to the crater.Visited February 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 2 March 2024
- Anna C6 contributionsThe best part of our trip in East Java! The views at Mount Bromo are incredible! The National park is set up with many different view points. I recommend booking a sunrise tour with semeru hostel when you arrive. You have to wake up at 12:30am to get there on time, but it is definitely worth it! Dress warm for the sunrise with a coat, jumper and trousers, but you’ll need to wear a t-shirt when hiking the volcano as it gets much warmer once the sun is out.Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 5 April 2024

This is a March 2021 review, so Pandemic review. It was like the country had never heard of it or the protocols that were supposed to be in place. It was so uncomfortable with people all around us not wearing masks and sitting so close that we left before sunrise, it was just too much. We went on a Wednesday night, Thursday being a Muslim holiday, so technically we were there Thursday morning. The people we chose to arrange for our jeeps were very kind and helpful. the jeeps seat five, but being a wide-ass American, I know what five seats mean. The front seat is for driver and passenger - where the tallest one should sit, the back seats sit against the side window with two and two facing each other. Be aware that you are climbing up and the infrastructure is tight and curvy. We went to the farthest lookout point for the sunrise, not sure of the name, it had a concrete leveled structure for people to sit on. Very few people had their masks on or if they had a mask it covered their chin and not their mouth and nose. The hawkers are walking and stepping through you and around you. They are tenacious. The ground is cold, bring a blanket to sit on. We left for the sunrise, it was toooo much. It would not have been fun for anyone for me to get angrier than I already was. We did not go to Bromo, we decided to leave. We did not want to deal with numerous, unmasked strangers walking beside us. I had read that we need to make reservations before going bc the Park was painting how many people were entering the park so COVID protocols could be handled. That was fake news. I am just giving you a heads up if this concerns you. You may notice on the way up to the tour and on the way down the lack of mask and 6 feet in the small villages/cities. Maybe some other time or not a sunrise?

we came early in the morning (around 1 am from malang) ride a jeep to Mount Bromo. the guide is very friendly, the ride is very adventurous (beware for those who have motion sickness) but I really enjoy it. the sunrise is amazing, the bromo crater is worth all the very-far-away-walk, but you can also ride a horse. everything is superb.

The sunrise on Mount Bromo was spectacular, but to take half an hour of photos (moreover huddled in the mass of Asians taking selfies after selfie), it is not worth leaving at 2 am among the hundreds of jeeps trying to gain a few meters compared to the others, waiting in the icy traps smoked by the burning ashes to warm up and then stand from 4.20 to 5.10 in the icy wind to occupy the place to see the sunrise. Then it takes almost an hour to leave with the jeeps, because until everyone is back in the vehicles, the road is blocked (the jeeps are parked in the street without leaving access).
The super organized trip then continues at the foot of the volcano, where it starts for the short climb, always in the crowd. We were then sad to see the horses forced to carry idle tourists up and down the crater under the scorching sun from dawn until three in the afternoon. In 2024 we expected more awareness and respect for animals.

Mount Bromo, one of Indonesia's most iconic tourist destinations, is located in Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park in East Java. The most famous of Bromo is his sunrise seriously, beautifully! Many people came in the dawn just to see the sun rising from the Penanjakan Hill including me, hehe, and after the sun began to appear, the sky changed its colors very beautifully. but unfortunately in the month of August clouds appeared only a little. While I was already shaded with the sea of the clouds. So maybe for you who want to bromo should consult first about what the moon is good to see the sea of clouds. After seeing the sunrise, we walk in the vast ocean of sand, feel like kayak in the desert! And it's time to take photos in the jeep car so that it's in bromo. For climbing to the crater, you can walk or ride a horse. At that time I was talking about sports and diet wkwk so the walk to the crater even had to climb hundreds of stairs. Up above the crater, we are immediately faced with a remarkable sight of a large crater about 800 meters in diameter that emits white smoke from within. One thing that is also interesting is the smell of sulfur that smells around the crater, adding to the impression that this is really an active volcano. Passing down from the crater I finally decided to ride horses because besides tired, also itung-hit help umkm also hehee, if you want to ride a horse costs 150 thousand. The name "Teletubbies Hill" is given due to its soft, green, wave-shaped hill, and similar to the background of the famous Teletubbies TV show. In addition to the aesthetic and green views, the atmosphere here is also very calm and cool, especially if you visit in the morning. The fresh mountain air mixed with a calm landscape makes Teletubbies a perfect place to relax and enjoy nature. Many Travellers like the photos here because every corner is Instagrammable! You can see the contrast between the green hill and the clear blue sky, making the photo more cool.

Jan. 03, 2023 Foggy weather, few tourists, little traffic. The bus driver in Probolinggo directed us to his friends in the Jeep, who had to pay the same amount once again. This included the national park entrance fee, but we did not see that it was paid for. The price (if I remember correctly, it was 750k) included access to the caldera and the 1st lookout point. Due to the foggy weather, they only took us halfway to the lookout point, and then to the caldera parking lot. They ask for another 200k for each additional stop. After we finally got away from them, the weather cleared, so we walked up to the 2nd viewpoint. They didn't even offer to help, wait, etc., the job was done on their part and they just let us go without us seeing anything.
So if someone spares a couple of hours, the jeep will only take you halfway to the caldera anyway, and the 1st lookout point can be reached from the 2nd as well, and you will be richer for an unforgettable walk and some money.
The view is great, but not quite like the telescopic lens's stock photos. A bit of a disappointment, but really cool.
Also, don't miss the Madakaripura waterfall!!!

I went to Bromo last December with my family (parents, siblings, cousins). We are kind of anti-mainstream that we didn't choose to do the midnight-early morning tour like other people usually do. We chose to go there nearly midday and travel around until the afternoon (nearly evening though). However, we still have the tour service, complete with the jeep and tour guide, we even got some gloves and beanies, not to forget LUNCH included in the tour!
We arrived at Pasir Berbisik Hills just right after the drizzle. It was cool (not too cold but we still need to wear jackets or jumpers) and luckily it was not too dusty. The tour guide told us it is usually dusty if it doesn't rain. We then visited Teletubbies Hills and went to the other side of the area called Love Hills (Bukit Cinta) to take pictures.
It was definitely a fun hike, my parents could do it regardless their age and physical condition. Also, the great view and fresh air really helped me to relax.

Bonjour Brigitte. Je cherchais une excursion Bromo et Ijen en 2 jours.
Peux tu me dire avec quelle agence que tu as booké ton forfait ?

I'm planning to visit Bali in February end and was planning to visit Bromo. I'm traveling with my wife and our 7-month old infant. Is it safe for her?
Rather on a scale of "Please, don't do it" to "it's tough, but ok" to "Aah ok. Just be safe, it should be fine", where would you rate it?
If it's the second or third, what are the precautions needed?
