Ritigala is situated 65 km from the ancient city of Anuradhapuara, and on the Anuradhapura - Habarana road through the Kandy-Jaffna Highway (A13 and A9) and 38 km from town of Habarana. Ritigala is a strict forest reserve and is known for its mountain range known as "Ritigala Kanda". Ritigala Kanda is the highest mountain in the Northern Region of... More

This is a special place---a group of ruins with a "jungle feel." It is off the beaten path and does not receive the volume of visitors other sites experience. The entry fee is much less than other cultural sites (~300 rps), and the site, itself, is not as well restored. However, if you want an experience that feels more remote... More

Me and my girlfriend did this beautiful walk solo without a guide, it was one of the most breathtaking treks I did my whole time in Sri Lanka. Lush jungle, not too tiring but with some exciting elements. Easy and very memorable.

Ritigala is the site of the ruins of a Buddhist sect of which not a great deal is known except that they lived a strict meditative lifestyle. One can imagine how it must have looked hidden on the side of a remote mountain and dream of what life must have been like then.

Carrying a history of thousands of years.... some sources said that goes back to the era of great king RAWANA who mentioned in Ramayana.... Once a monastery and once a natural fortress.....

Lush and green. Almost magical. Not much to see apart from the old ruins of the monastery. However it's a different kind of experience. Pay this place a visit if you are around the area.

A lot of work has gone into restoring the pavement that leads op to the various parts of the monastery. There is little information available on site. Take a rough guide to get some idea of what is going on, or hire a guide - but make sure he knows what he is talking about. Our tuk tuk driver was... More

Definitely recommend a trip to the beautiful and peaceful Ritigala. Although we chose not to hire a guide in most places we visited, a guide is helpful at Ritigala to make the most out of your visit. Lots of wildlife to see. A bit of a hike to see all the ruins but the walk is under the cover of... More
