The 12m high clock tower is one built in 1936 as a gift to commemorate the reign of His Majesty King George V by entrepreneur and philantropist Lim Lean Teng.
It has been the icon for Sungai Petani since then.

The is one of major landmark of Sungai Petani located on the main street. Jalan Ibrahim. The clock tower was built in 1936 and it is 12.1 m in height. The history of this building as a present from Lim Lean Teng to George V and Queen Mary to commemorate the Silver Jubilee.
So you can have a quick look and take a photo when there isn't too much traffic around it. It looks historic and old as a contrast to all the modern buildings which have sprung up in Sungai Petani nearby. So worth looking for it while you are in the area.

As a visitor to Sungai Petani for the first time I was so impressed with the Grab driver who drove me to my friend's place. All the way to my destination he took time to explain where the special landmarks in Sungai Petani were. The Clock Tower was one that we drove past. Loved the old landmark smack in town.

If you are a history enthusiast do not forget to visit this clock tower whenever you are in Sungai Petani. This is the most popular heritage landmark in this town and yup the clock is still ticking. Do be careful when you are taking selfie or wefie as this clock is at the center of the main road in this town. The state has improved the surrounding tremendously and thus has become a popular teen hangout, though it is quite an eyesore if there are too many of them. There are many restaurants surrounding the clock tower, from KFC to Indian food, to Chinese food and of course, plenty of Malay dishes served at the hawker stalls.

My friends said, this is Jam Besar Sg Petani. The design is bit old and look historic. I just past around this place after exit from Tol Sg Petani Selatan, and would like to go to Cinta Sayang resort. Rest a little while at SP plaza and just taken several picture as memory.. Nothing much to see, but nice monument in the middle of the town.

No big deal unless you're really into clock towers - nice landmark but that's about it. You can't miss it as you go through town.
