We enjoyed driving around and exploring this area.... it is really beautiful and has lots of interesting landscapes to photograph. The roads can be narrow in some parts but with a speed limit of 40 it didn't really present any issues as cars had plenty...More

I would recommend to drive here and enjoy the scene. There are several parking spots during the way. A lots of horses and cows around this active volcano.

Mount Aso crater at the peak is close at 1km radius due to volcanic activity. This grassland is as close as one can get to the crater. Would recommend dropping by.

As the Aso geopark is closed, this place is the best place to visit. Horseriding is not allowed in December, but the entire field area is open for you to roam around. Great sense of freedom. Takes about 500 yen for a one way bus...More

It's a big grass made by burning every year. You can walk there. You can also ride horse. But you cannot ride a horse by your own there. Not uncommon.

Right now there's a 2 km exclusion zone around the volcano and many of the walks are off limits. Still you can get reasonably close and the crater lets off enticing puffs of smoke. The car park costs 410 yen.
