So this place has an amazing location, no doubt. The views everywhere are increíble the little old village is stunning to walk about and definitely worth a visit.
However the hotel is not so good. When we visited it was very quiet. There were no seats outside to have a drink and enjoy the view, only an internal café with no windows.
Rooms are basic, minimal bright lighting, no tea or coffee or drinks of any kind. Average bed and pillows, average bathroom, all very spartan.
Dinner was very poor, some of the worse food I've had in spain, and a very basic and not fresh breakfast which we didn't have, no juice, no fresh tomato, pre frozen bread.
So my recommendation? Come to visit for the day, but don't bother staying overnight, its not worth it.

Our stay here was outstanding. The room and location were incredible. We booked half board and were certainly not disappointed. The dinner was exceptional and extremely good value for money. I can’t recommend this highly enough. We will be back for a return visit!

If you fancy a trip through some real Spanish villages away from the hustle of the costas with some spectacular views, Castellar de la Frontera is just the ticket. A few hours spent meandering back through time, having a relaxing meal in the restaurant is well worth the hike up to the castle. Ignore the first parking sign and drive up to the top car park to avoid the hike up.

We did a detour on our day back from visiting Gibraltar and visited the zoo ( amazing) then continued through the new village of Castillo ( old village got drowned when the created the dam of water).
We had a steep and bendy climb up into the hills.
( suggest you don’t visit at a busy w/e).
There is limited parking along the toad by the small shop, more on the mirador stop overlooking the dam ( then a steep walk up to the castle.)
We bought several cork items from the shop, cakes, honey and coffee with the free Sotogrande newspaper ( in English and English).
Climb up to the castle and you find a whole little village of a hotel with 9 rooms, some rural casas to rent, couple of craft shops and a restaurant.
The paths are steep, cobblestoned and present visual feasts around every corner.
There is a balcony look out over the dam from the side.
It was windy when I was exploring and the hotel shut off access to a high terrace.
It makes a real Spanish insight in a past life😍

Beautiful , peaceful and quaint. A real honeymoon village. There are a few hikes to do if you are adventurous or you can just chill in one of the interesting little pubs , enjoying a good meal and a bottle of wine.

Whilst on holiday with my wife in Los Barrios I took a drive on my own up to this medieval retreat, really glad I did, it’s a truly stunning piece of history. The drive on the way up alone is worth it, leaving herds of tourists behind you for about 5 or 6 kilometers your car winds ever upwards giving you spectacular views, that’s just the start though, if like me you end up in small car park below the castle itself, you then take a quite a steep walk up to the complex itself (it can be driven up to by road on the other side for the less able) once inside the castle walls you realize there’s a whole village on the go around you, from the rows of cobbled streets with white terraced houses to the bar, cafes or hotel, it’s all rather surprising and not quite what I expected when looking up to such an interesting piece of Spanish history, it’s huge, clean, oozing in its medieval past plus it’s a lot cooler up there on a scorching day. This place will stay in my memory for its breathtaking views, a great day out from beach life, a somewhat surprising little adventure (my wife wouldn’t have liked the winding roads but they’re perfectly safe) most of all though, this is everyone’s idea of a real castle, a massive, medieval walled structure that was built to protect its inhabitants ..with life still going on there as it did all those years ago.

Magnifico! We have fallen in love with this beautiful place. If dramatic scenery, history drenched atmosphere and quiet charm is your thing then this is a must visit place. I am not sure if it is accessible via public transport but we have family nearby who drove us up the winding hillside roads to this magnificent medieval castle/fort. It is truly majestic with stunning views and (in October at least) delightful cooling winds to take the edge off the heat. There is a tiny bar, A couple of gift shops and even houses inside this castle. It is quirky and charming and we especially like the lover's balcony ❤

Castillo de Castellar de la Frontera is a hidden gem in the Algeciras country side. The place offers stunning views of the surrounding forests, fields, accumulation lake and hills. Best way to visit is just to walk around this small fortified town and discover its typical white-washed Andalusian streets. It is also a place frequented and inhabited by a number of artists, whose works you can admired either on the cobbled narrow streets of in a number of small galleries. The castle's keep is today a hotel. Even if we were not staying there the staff was welcoming and kind and let us take a look around from the hotel's terrace. Fantastic location to visit for a day trip from Gibraltar as well.

This place certainly has the "WOW" factor. It's a beautiful castillo town perched high above the surrounding area that was abandoned on mass in the 1970's after the government built the population a new town (castellar de la frontera) in the valley below. Now most of the tiny houses inside the fortification have been bought by foreigners and turned into summer rentals. There is a couple of fine art shops and an artist's gallery. I'm sure for July and August it might be a bit busy with holiday makers and tourists but the rest of the year it is a ghost town with just a few cats around. There is a hotel just inside the entrance and a nice restaurant in the middle with what appears to have a good menu but sadly no opening times are posted. There is flora and fauna everywhere. It's truly amazing walking though the tiny cobbled alleyways. Great 1/2 day excursion... Just before you enter the castillo the is a really quaint tapas bar which is a must. Ecotaperia El cortijo.... see separate review.

¿El castillo en sí es el hotel? ¿Se puede entrar en el castillo para subir a las azoteas o las torres de las esquinas?

We are thinking of staying in the Hotel Castillo de castellar this year and would like to know what sort of menu they have and whether it is worth going half board?

Hi as far as shops go there aren’t any other than gifts. Limited restaurants as well unless you are going to drive out.
