About
The tower of Ribes Roges was built in the last third of the 19th century as a defensive element to protect the Maritime Quarter from potential attack, by sea or by land, of the troops of Carlists or bandits, and is the only survivor of the three that were on the coastline. In the year 2000 the artist Josep Guinovart (1927-2007) transformed the old watchtower of the promenade into a tribute site to seafarers and to the sea itself: at the first floor, legends and stories about the sea; at the second floor, a rope-structure with a set of fishing knots, symbol of the hard work of fishermen and sailors; at the third floor, the artists who found their inspiration in the sea; and at the roof, a view on the real sea of Vilanova i la Geltru. Opening hours 2022: from June 10 to September 11, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 6pm to 9pm.
Duration: < 1 hour

"La Torre Blava" (the Blue Tower) is a fascinating little place, but it is not that easy to visit. It is only open in summer on Sundays from 6pm to 9pm. Then sporadically at other times of the year (Easter weekend, for example.) However, guided tours can be arranged at other times by contacting the appropriate authorities. Type "Torre Blava - Espai Guinovart" into a search engine and you will probably be directed to their website with the number and email to contact for private views.
Historically the tower was one of three erected to defend the fishing village of Vilanova from attacks by corsairs, pirates or enemy navies. It had several uses after that which you will learn about on your visit. The only one now standing, the Blue Tower has been converted into a curious art installation by the sculptor Josep Guinovart (1927-2007). Guinovart wanted the space to be a homage to the sea and the sea farers from the town who braved its vagaries, often dedicating their entire lives to the sea or even losing them in tragic incidents.
I will not attempt to describe the interior, because I wish you to be as surprised and fascinated as I was on entering the building. Suffice to say it has a charm all its own and like Dr Who's Tardis, appears to be bigger on the inside than it is on the outside.
Altogether a fine way to spend an odd (and I choose that word carefully) hour on a Sunday evening in summer. Highly recommended.

You have to take you changes on this museum. It’s very rarely open. No reasons given why.
It’s a short walk from the bottom of the Rambla at the port area. I would allow no more than half hour for the visit as it is very small but very interesting.

Thank you! The Torre Blava opens during the summer and some few days along the year because of its location on the promenade, which has more activity during the summer months. Hope you enjoyed the history inside the Torre Blava ;)

A well maintained little tower which is very interesting, with information on local legends of days gone by.

A visit to this little tower is very interesting, because it gives you an art experience, a bit of local history, a bit of local legends and a very nice view from the roof at the same time. Of course it's best if you speak local languages, because the guides may not speak English well enough to explain all the stories. My favourite: the knot sculpture in the second floor.
