Weardale Wonder
Sep 2021
For the last 18months or so, the great British public has missed out on the institution that is the great British pub.
I'd never even heard of the Black Lion, Wolsingham prior to last week, we'd been walking & discovering some staggering scenery in Weardale when we came upon the Black Lion.
Newly refurbished, great British pub, chatty landlady, resident cat, welcoming locals...and damn good sandwiches, big thanks to Sarah Jane & the chap behind the bar, sorry forgot your name!
Meant to say, great wine list for a pub in the middle of nowhere, we will return TY!

Traditional pub
Aug 2021
We popped in for a drink after walking around Tunstall Reservoir. It was very quiet - a good old traditional pub with no background noise or music ... beer mats pinned to the old beams - you get the picture. At first I thought the lack of noise would disappoint me and I thought I might have to whisper but no, it was absolutely fine! The landlady was nice to us and was happy to chat (mainly about our dog) which was lovely as she can be allergic to some dogs. It's a pub for locals and everyone who came in knew each other, which I think shows good community spirit. We would happily drop in for a drink if we're in Wolsingham at some point

Unfriendly, not dog friendly
Aug 2020 • Friends
I didn’t write a review after my first visit however this most recent visit was just as disappointing.
A lovely rural visit in the heart of Wolsingham.
I phoned in advance and was advised the pub was dog friendly. On arrival the lady serving drinks shouted and was very upset because our 12 year old elderly Labrador, on a lead was too close to her advising she did not like dogs.
I just felt really unwelcome after this. After buying drinks, we asked or a water bowl for our dog. We were then informed we had to take him outside and use a bowl which was used for all dogs outside, near the drain.
This may be standard practice in some establishments, however we will never visit this one again.

Fantastic little pub, a nice range of real ales and ciders, I'd definitely recommend stopping in for a few pints

Lovely little traditional pub.

What a lovely little pub on the doorstep (literally two mins walk) from my holiday cottage rental in the village. A great selection of ales and ciders, friendly staff and very covid secure etc.

It had a great community vibe, the landlady was lovely and so were the friendly locals- people clearly love this pub and are proud of their village/surrounding areas... we got some tips from locals here and picked up some great walking maps too.

A proper pub in a nice village The black Lion has it all a nice beer garden, log fire, real beer and cider, larger and lots of gin. They also show sports have a pool table and a juke box.

Great little pub in Wolsingham
Sep 2019
This is a brilliant traditional pub right in the middle of Wolsingham village. There is a very friendly atmosphere, a good selection of beers and spirits, and a very friendly pub cat too. Although we didn't eat here, we were told there are theme nights (curry etc) and these are hugely popular and need to be booked via the pubs Facebook page. There is a TV for sports fans but this does not interfere with the quiet and relaxed atmosphere. The staff are polite and friendly and make you feel very welcome. Overall a very positive experience and a pub I would definitely go back to.

Unwelcoming
Aug 2019 • Family
We visited this establishment today,on entering a lovely country pub feel and the regulars very friendly. Unfortunately the landlady leaves a lot to be desired, correcting my daughter when she was talking to her dad and in general a pitiful approach . We visited this pub about a year a go and had the same experience but thought we would give it another chance. Certainly won’t be doing that again. Nice pub, shame about the landlady ! When we had first entered the establishment, ordering our drinks we asked for a double vodka, which usually wouldn’t be a problem, but our request was greeted with a stern and rude no, saying that they only serve 35ml,fine but the attitude could have been different.

Good Ale and Gin!!
May 2019 • Couples
We found this pub to be the only proper pub in Wolsingham! No food available, but a straight forward and good choice of well kept ales.
Not forgetting the gins!
Good for watching sport, but with a pretty beer garden if sport is not your thing.
The land lady was welcoming and polite.
This is a comfortable and friendly place, and became our local for a week.
