Easy riding through the beautiful Karangahake Gorge

Took the trail from Paeroa to Waikino with a 2 year old on a bike seat and 65 year old leading the way. The track is generally flat, gravel and easy riding for 1.5 hours. We... read more

Took the trail from Paeroa to Waikino with a 2 year old on a bike seat and 65 year old leading the way. The track is generally flat, gravel and easy riding for 1.5 hours. We extended it to 2 hours with stops at interesting sites. Gorgeous views of the gorge from the bridge crossings. We hired bikes from the... More

I took my 8 and 7 year old sons on the trail and completed Thames to Paeroa (33kms) on day one, Paeroa to Waihi (25kms) on day two. All I can say is it's one of the best things I've ever done with them! Great track very easy for them and the second day through the Karangahake Gorge is nothing... More

We did the Paeroa to Waihi section of the trail (and return) in a single day. We started at Paeroa at about 9:45am, had lunch at Waikino and rode on to Waihi. We then caught the vintage train back to Waikino (strongly recommend this) before riding back to Paeroa. It was a round trip of about 40km riding. While we... More

A group of us hired bikes from Paeroa Info Centre, Comfort and Mountain bikes. Biked from Paeroa to Waikato then decided to carry on to Waihi. The trail to Waikino was great and the seats on the Comfort bikes were actually comfortable. Places to stop along the way include a couple of cafes and a local pub. Trip through the... More

We enjoyed the round trip from Paeroa to Waikino which took us about 4 hours depending on how much time you stop along the way. The kilometre-long tunnel is a highlight - bring a torch so that others can see you coming!

We didn't get to borrow the bicycles as we were late and a group of young people got the last of the smaller bicycles. The staff were very helpful and suggested we go for the Karangahe Mine historic walk. When we were at the Gorge, we saw one young person who was struggling with his bicycle as the chains came... My partner and I are early 50's and just completed the Paeroa to Thames and then paeroa to Waihi sections of the trail. It was good to be based in Paeroa. The weather was good and the trail was very quiet being midweek and not in holiday time. Day one we we averaged 15kph to Thames. We enjoyed the farm... More
