If you go to Sumatra, it's a good chance you will go to Bukit Lawang. It's well worth it, the orang-utans are the natural comedians of the animal world. If you go on a jungle trek, you should have a degree of fitness. Couch potatoes need not apply.

Bukit Lawang is around 100 kms from Medan, Sumatra's most populous city. Bukit Lawang offers an opportunity to see orang-utans in their native habitat. Orang-utan means in Indonesian "Man of the Forest." They seem to be a bunch of sad sacks; most of them are orphans. Bukit Lawang is also a jumping off point for jungle trekking. Some say tigers... Two friends and I spent 6 days in Sumatra with our guide Josef. We spent amazing moments there, seeing monkeys in the jungle, riding an elephant and seeing traditional dances in Lake Toba.
