We visit the Buchheim Museum each year when we stay at the Starnbergsee and are never disappointed. There is a large permanent collection and special exhibitions. This year's special exhibition features the paintings of Friedensreich Hundertwasser. While I prefer his architecture, I had not realized the enormous number of paintings he made. Do not fail to take in the view... More

Great museum with very nice pieces of art mostly German expressionists but also more modern pieces as well as african and asian art. The building is hanging over the lake and is simply beautiful. Lovely park with unusual sculptures. A must see if you are in the region.

The setting of this museum is idyllic and one can linger in the cafe but what awaits you inside is fascinating. From the car entwined by an octopus at the entrance one passes through the shop which is full of interesting gifts (our 5 year old loved a bouncy ball with sparkles inside) to the rooms full of well curated... Very interesting museum at the Starnberger Museum. The location is great, the history of the museum and which cities it declined it is interesting and the exhibition itself is very diverse and a lot of times very funny. We were very much positively surprised!

Such a cool place to visit and walk around! You are right at the lake and they also have a cafe where you can sit outside with a view on the lake.

The Museum shows the Art Collection of Lothar-Günther Buchheim, the German author of "das Boot" a famous novel about submarines which was also adapted as a movie. Obviously, a large part of the museum is dedicated to the works of Buchheim himself, which is not necessarily the most interesting section. At the time I visited the museum, most of the... More

There is wonderful expressionist art on display here, including work from the Blue Rider group of early 20th century artists. There is a magnificent Jawlensky face. But there is more, including a collection of African art, a mini circus and fantasy art as well as a section devoted to the story of the book and movie, Das Boot. Architecturally, the... More

If you are looking for a day excursion from Munich with parts culture, history, and natural beauty, I can recommend a visit to the Buchheim Museum, located on beautiful Lake Starnberg. Learn about Lothar Buchheim, the author of Das Boot and the museum founder, and then visit the impressive collection of German expressionist art. If time permits, a visit to... More
