Small church, superb ornamentation.

This was the best place we saw in Priego. A small church with €1.5 entrance fee, but what a superb ceiling! Heavy and ornate plasterwork, over the top but not as vulgar as many Spanish churches. Altar is richly gilded. Well worth a visit, 5 minute walk from the castle.

A feast for the senses!

Again, keep an eye out for siesta time. But this is worth a look. It's amazingly over the top. Keep in mind that it's a small town church ultimately so there's little in the way of English signage etc but use your imagination and just take it all in

This church is more like a small chapel but is worth the small fee around €1.50 to see yet more amazing works

La Aurora - Magnificently Adorned and Over-The-Top Baroque!
Sep 2014 • Couples
Wow! We sat outside this church having a drink and watching a local event in which handmade gardenias were auctioned off at nominal sums to gentlemen who then pinned them onto their ladies. This was a local church fund raising event. We popped our heads inside the church and were overwhelmed by the stunning interior. AMAZING!

Beautiful Church
Aug 2011 • Couples
The Church of Our Lady of Dawn was built on the site of the shrine to St. Nicasio, the patron saint of Priego and it was completed around 1528. Juan de Dios Santaella reconstructed the church in the 18th century. The church has a rectangular plan and an arched ceiling in five sections with windows. There are plaster figures of St. Peter, St. Paul, and the Evangelists. There is an exuberant Baroque plasterwork that covers the cupola, ceiling, and windows. The designs are geometric, and has designs of plants and flowers. There are also designs of angels. The main altar has the figure of St. Nicasio. The Chapel of the Virgin has a sculpture of the Virgin by Diego de Mora. There is a bell tower of Baroque design and the main door was completed in 1772 and is decorated with plenty of marble. There are two levels and the lower has Corinthian columns, while the upper part has spiral pillars that frame the niche of the Virign.
