The best fort to see along Hadrian's wall!

This was the most touristy place that we visited in our week in the north Pennines. Entrance price reasonable but found the additional car park charge excessive. Staff in ticket office rude particularly when they issued us with a wrongly priced ticket and we pointed out their mistake. Staff at museum were friendly. A steep climb to the fort and... More

The fort is located up a hill but it is worth the climb! The small museum sets the scene and also has a short video. Then follow the path further up the hill to see the fort that has the entire boundary wall excavated and heaps of the buildings! There isn't an audio guide but there are plenty of panels... More

Staff not totally focused on making your visit rememberable. Car Park charges a complete rip off as the although the site is jointly managed by NT & EH the car park is owned and charged by Northumberland Council. This chage is a flat rate £4.00 for all day, for NT & EH members and everyone else. Get your act together... More

This is a well presented historical site, the remains of the Roman fort are quite good, with information boards and labels throughout the fort. Hadrian's Wall forms the back of the fort and you can walk up onto the wall for an excellent view. The small museum has some lovely artifacts and good information and the visitor centre has a... The exhibit itself is small but excellent. It shows how similar the fort was to other forts around the empire, the finds they have made, and what life might be like inside the fort and along the wall. The remains are much less interesting. It is said to be one of the best-preserved Roman forts in Europe. But there's still... More

Billed as "The most complete fort on Hadrian's Wall," Houseteads has a big reputation to live up to. If you are one of those people who is happiest pottering around amongst rambling acres of foundation stones, then this is certainly the place for you. There are a lot of stones here, and plenty of plaques to tell you what used... More

Hadrian's Wall is always striking, more so on a clear day when you can see way into the distance. In March it is a little parky so best to wear a coat, and you can imagine how the Romans complained about the cold, but it's a fantastic walk and the walks are well maintained and popular with parking places (to... Firstly make sure you have £4 ready for the rip off car park. The location of the fort is amazing, but this is thanks to the Romans. Plenty of the fort remains unexcervated. Info on the site itself is very poor. Needs attention!

Very interesting visit. Was amazed to see just how large the fort was. It was easy to see all the different areas of the fort. Staff were helpful and on hand to answer any questions.
