Seaton Tramway operates narrow gauge heritage trams between Seaton, Colyford and Colyton in East Devon's glorious Axe Valley, travelling alongside the River Axe estuary through two nature reserves and giving an unrivalled view of the abundant wading bird life. The coastal resort of Seaton is now a gateway town to the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, whilst the historic town of Colyton is described as "Devon's Most Rebellious Town" for its part in the Monmouth Rebellion of 1685.The company originated at the Lancaster Electrical Company of Barnet, which manufactured battery electric vehicles. In 1949 its owner, Claude Lane, indulged his hobby by building a miniature 15” gauge tram, which he ran at garden fetes. This portable system enjoyed temporary homes at St Leonard’s and Rhyl before evolving onto the 2’ gauge Eastbourne Tramway. Many of the present trams were built at Eastbourne, but by the mid 1960’s the tramway’s success was outgrowing the mile line. Claude therefore began to look for alternative locations. In late 1969, Claude purchased the Seaton to Colyton section after the branchline had been closed by Dr Beeching in 1966 and, after a mammoth relocation from Eastbourne, the first section was opened in 1980. Since then the tramway has developed into one of Devon’s best loved attractions.New trams have been added to the fleet and the buildings have been much improved in order to meet the needs of the thousands of enthusiastic people who visit each year.

What a pleasure! We took a return trip on the Seaton Tramway and started at the north end at Colyton (this was much easier for parking). The trams and the tram line are vintage and it is like riding in a bit of history. They have a fleet of trams, everyone different, and include both enclosed and open topped one.... More

We took a round trip on the tramway with some friends and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The countryside was looking great, the drivers were informative and the various trams absolutely charming. We stopped off for lunch at The White Hart in Colyford and had a great time from start to finish.

This must be the umpteenth time we have been on the Seaton Tramway and we never leave disappointed. The views over the River Axe and countryside further along towards Colyton are superb. Staff are always very friendly and cheerful. The cafe at Colyton station is well recommended.

Fab little Saturday afternoon trip. We purchased a return trip on a sunny afternoon. We stopped off for a drink at the other end and got back on a few hours later. Great time waster and so much wildlife to see.

Boarded at Seaton on the open top tram. A beautiful evening to sit and observe nature almond the wetlands. The volunteers on the teams were so knowledgeable and helpful. We would highly recommend this experience to family and friends. There are also drive a tram sessions you can book and very reasonable priced. A great evening and perfect food at... More

took mum and her pooch for a day out in East Devon, and spent the afternoon in Seaton via the tram from Colyton, staff are friendly and helpful, and what fabulous views from the trams along the former railway line, you can still see one of the old railway signals amongst the ivy. A must do if you're in the... More
