Owner description:

Lismore Castle Gardens and Gallery are situated on the edge of the heritage town of Lismore, the proud winner of numerous Tidiest Town awards.

Visitors are invited to wander in the historic gardens, arranged over seven acres within the 17th century outer defensive walls of Lismore Castle. The gardens are said to be the oldest continually cultivated gardens in Ireland and they offer spectacular views of both Lismore castle and the surrounding countryside of the Blackwater valley.

Featuring a wide variety of beautifully maintained plants and trees, as well as a permanent sculpture collection, Lismore Castle Gardens is one of the highlights of The Waterford Garden Trail, which includes fifteen gardens around Co. Waterford. Please note the castle itself is a private residence and is therefore not open to visitors.

Entry to the garden includes access to the contemporary art gallery, Lismore Castle Arts, which hosts exhibitions of Irish and international artists. There is also a small refreshment counter and a reading room, plus art materials available for children.

Visitors might also enjoy other attractions located within walking distance of the gardens. These include Lismore Cathedral, the Heritage Centre and Lady Louisa's walk, as well as a number of bars, cafes, restaurants and shops.

Please note due to the historic nature of the gardens and the naturally steep terrain of the ground, there are some unavoidable limitations on access for visitors who use a wheelchair or are less mobile. The gallery, Lismore Castle Arts, is occasionally closed for installation of temporary exhibitions, please contact us for full details.

My grandfather managed the estate when I was young so spent a lot of my youth getting lost in lower and upper gardens. I met an old friend I hadn't seen in years and after lunch took the kids down here accidentally, with no expectation as it was a glorious day. Same gardens as when I was a kid -... More

Lismore Castle makes quite a visual statement through the trees, towering over the estate's walls, as you cross over the bridge via R666 and pull into the parking lot up the hill on the right, you know these gardens will be something special, and they did not dissapoint. With the garden brochure/ map in hand, the many rare trees, sourced... More

We were attracted by the imposing presence of the castle as we drove over the bridge into Lismore, and so decided to explore the gardens and art gallery. Entry is via a gatehouse at the end of the driveway. What we found behind the castle walls was unexpected and surprising with the extensive gardens being a highlight of our visit... More

This venue was suggested to me by Butlers Tours as a place to which I could take a small group from a cruise ship berthed at Cobh. I found the manager very helpful both in advance and on the day when we arrived somewhat earlier than planned -- we had needed to allow for possible traffic delays or delays in... More

We visited here toward the end of the season. Note that it is only the gardens that you visit, not the castle, although you do get some lovely views from various parts of the garden. There are two parts to the garden - the high garden and the low garden with the former having more flowers. Seasonal changes obviously means... More

What a beautiful garden, very interesting with bits of modern sculpture and bits back to bygone days. Beautiful plants and well displayed a pity we could not see any of the castles inside.

This was on my list of things to see for many years and finally I made it. And it was so much more beautiful than I had expected. The view of Lismore Castle as you drive towards Lismore is breathtaking. But be prepared, the beauty of this estate will knock you off your feet. It's a massive feast for anybody... More

Pleasantly surprised we were able to wander around the beautiful gardens at no cost. Unable to view the castle as not open to the public. Loved the forest paths with the hidden statues. Unfortunately when we visited, there were not many flowers out, but when in full bloom, the gardens would be spectacular. Well worth a visit.

Wonderful old, walled and established, well tended gardens, with a quaint little coffee shop, so beautiful, Would recommend a trip here 100 %, and look forward to another trip there soon. Staff are very sweet and friendly.
