A place for contemplation!

Really enjoyed the visit and tour but you it really takes on a real feel if you have reread paradise lost or at least some his poetry before you visit.

Very modest and authentic atmosphere inside the cottage...The guides are very knowledgeable and friendly. This is where Milton completed "Paradise Lost", The cottage garden is 'Paradise Found' Tulips, daffodils, a blossoming cherry tree, bluebells, forget me nots, a magnolia tree ( planted on the occasion of the Queen Mother's visit in 1977) wild primroses on the grass etc etc

A tiny gem showing both how people lived and the history of the period between Charles 1 and Oliver Cromwell. The layout is clear and even if you don't know anything about John Milton you will come away with a better feel for the period around the Great Plague and the English Civil War. The bonus is the English garden... More

What a fantastic mind John Milton had. We learnt how creative he had been with inventing new words - 630 such as - DAMP, SENSUOUS, COMPLACENCY, PADLOCK to name but a few. Some very rare books on display in this cherished cottage where he live for a year or so to avoid the plague in London.

This cottage and museum is run by locals. It is tiny but it is the place where Milton wrote Paradise Lost.

We are always interested in visiting places of historical importance but this was a bit of a disappointment. There are only 2 rooms and it is only surmised from what we could make out that Paradise Lost was finished here. Most of the artefacts were editions of Milton's books which I found hard to read due to the size of... More

A small local museum with a fine collection of rare Milton's works. The volunteers guides are knowledgeable and helpful. The garden is grade 2 registered because it contains so many plants and flowers mentioned in Milton's works is worth a visit in it's own right. Entry donation by cash only. Car parking at the cottage.

I was staying in the area and my host mentioned this cottage. We did not know about the restricted opening hours, so we're lucky to visit when it was open. As mentioned in another review, cash only, so be prepared. There is a car park behind the cottage. On entering we were greeted by the volunteer staff and shown around... More

My daughter and are I are both poetry fans and I've been saying for some time that we should visit Milton's cottage, somewhere I went with my father back in the 70s! On arrival in Chalfont St Giles, our first problem was finding somewhere to park. We found a small carpark some way from the actual house and enjoyed a... More
