The show stealer for this castle is the scenery. It would be a fantastic place to visit with a picnic.

We went to visit the castle didn't check if its open just assumed it would be (it was) it's a fairly long walk not at all suitable to disabled guests but for us the several hundred steps to get to the castle was well worth the effort All in the Area should give it a go !!

This was a bit of a surprise, fab views over the North sea and an amazing castle. The surrounds are good for watching birds and dolphins but we were unlucky. free to view and next time we will walk the coastal path from Stonehaven to get the most from the visit. Good walking shoes would be needed.

Definitely worth it to park in the little town nearby and hike the 1.5 miles to the castle. Breath taking views right at sunset. So gorgeous!

We drove and confirmed that it's open but after a long drive and walk, it was closed! The sight is amazing though.

Hi Amanda, Thanks for the review, I'm happy that you found the sight amazing. I'm sorry the Castle was closed when you arrived after calling ahead. The wind speed that day when we opened was within safe limits, and the forecast didn't predict it getting to the critical level for us. However the actual wind speed picked up between us... More

We phoned and received confirmation that the castle was open as we were taking an Australian friend to visit one of Aberdeenshire's prime attractions. We were surprised to arrive an hour later and find the castle was closed, ostensibly because the weather was too windy, There was a light breeze, fairly normal for the Scottish seaside, and we commiserated with... Hi Peter, Thanks for taking the time to leave us a review. For health and safety reasons we are obliged to close the Castle if the wind speed is above 35mph. We do our very best to open and stay open every day, but sometimes the wind picks up to the level where it's unsafe to be inside for both... More

There is a lot of history to be found at Dunnottar -from Covenanters to Scotland's Crown Jewels. The castle sits in a beautiful location, surrounded by crashing waves and and the cries of birds. It is pretty tricky for anyone with mobility issues - I broke an ankle a couple of months back and was a little wary of the... More

We have walked from Stonehaven Harbour to Dunnottar castle a number of times and never fail to be amazed at the views over the North Sea from that path. In Summer you may be lucky to hear the sound of the bagpipes too. It is a wonderful experience to visit such an iconic ruin.

Set on the cliff side this castle is absolutely stunning. I visited outside of opening hours as this is the only time drone photography is allowed, but I was still in awe of this castle
