If you appreciate a calm walk in historical surroundings...

Take your time and leave E6 for a while and enjoy a nice stroll among old remnants from the iron age. There is what is called a stone ship to see. Mostly tumulus around. Go there with your own thoughts and look around. Chance is big you will be there alone.

Dont forget to look into the cafe with a little museum, and some very nice handicraft for sale! People there are very nice, too!!

We made a small detour at the end of our long hike down the Bohusleden. What a special place to visit. Really impressive view!

Conveniently accessible Iron Age site
Oct 2018 • Friends
While driving from Oslo to Gothenburg, we made a stop here to see the Iron Age ship-shaped stone circle. Across the road and up the slope there is also an Iron Age grave field. According to the information board, both the stone ship and the grave field were built before 600AD, when the sea was 5m higher than the current level and the stone ship overlooked a sheltered bay. This historical site is conveniently accessible from the motorway and there was nobody at the site when we were there.

Interesting!

My partner and I rode our bikes out from Strömstad, an easy 25min ride, mainly on designated bike paths to this little gem of a place (Cycling map picked up in Strömstad Information Centre-Cykelkarta). Great "Ekomuseum" meaning without walls or roof, the site is well maintained with info boards in Swedish, German and English and it's an easy walk between the 3 interesting sites. Well worth an hour of your time! English pamphlet available from information centre too.

Interesting if you’re in the area

Just 5 minutes from the Strömstad junction on the main motorway between Oslo and Gothenburg. The whole site is spread out over two large areas on either side of a minor road. You could spend around an hour looking at the standing stones, the burial mound and the small museum. Both times we have been there we’ve only seen a few other people. It doesn’t seem that many people know about it. Certainly worth a visit if you’re interested in ancient civilizations and are looking for a peaceful place to contemplate life.
