We did the Maketawa hut round trip in reverse of that suggested in the brochure. I am glad we did it that way. The climb up was relentless steep climb up a 4WD track, but manageable with reasonable fitness. The panoramas and mountain views were awesome. Lunch at the hut and down through the beautiful and ever-changing bush. But the... More

Have flown over the volcano on a couple of occasions and thought how amazing it looked from the air. During this visit to NZ we decided to make the trip to New Plymouth to see it closer at hand. It was a pretty clear day and the views from near and far were just stunning. We drove up to Dawson... More

I travelled from New Plymouth up to the North information centre early morning and it was an ordinary cloudy morning but the further I drove up the mountain the clearer the day became. Arriving at the i centre the cloud had gone revealing some magnificent views, plenty of parking and very friendly helpful staff. A good range of walks from... More

I found this mountain to be most scenic and energizing. I trekked to the top, which was a demanding ascent, especially since the last third involves climbing on loose scree. I was fortunate in having a great view from the top. Then I did a one night backpack. The first day while traversing the flanks of the mountain I was... More

Mt Taranaki can be on your travel bucket if you are visiting New Plymouth. A wonderful road trip to the mountain and beautiful walkway. Enjoyed a lot in the snow. Make sure you have the perfect gear for the hike. Dawson falls is a place of attraction and the walkway to the bottom of the falls is definitely one to... More

It had been raining and the sky was covered in heavy cloud when we arrived and it looked like we were going to miss seeing the the mountain. We walked to Dawson Falls which was lovely to see and well worth a visit even in the wet but just be careful as its a bit slippery under foot and on... More

It's places like this that makes me say "what a great country I live in". The road to Mt Taranaki is really nice and enjoyable. But once you get to the place, it's even better. Be sure to take lots of food because there aren't many places to dine or its expensive. If you are on a budget then there... More
