Most of tourist tents to pass over Taranaki, and i don't understand why. The trail to the top is hard but great, and the loop trail arount Taranaki us even better (don't to both in just 2 days like I did, it's too hard, add an extra day)

What an amazing day!!! The weather was awesome not to hot. We left North Egmont visitor Centre( make sure you write in the book what your plans are) at 6am and headed up the puffer to catch the sunrise. On the way up to the lodge there were amazing views of the sun rise coming up behind Tongariro/ Mount ruapehu... More

The weather was good, which attracted lots of trampers that day onto the mountain. North Egmont visitor center car park was already full when I arrived at 9am. There's an alternative starting route from the Stratford Plateau with a large car park. Between the 2 car park is about an hour's drive. The alternative route starts at a higher altitude,... More

This mountain and national park is very peculiar and beautiful. It stands alone like a volcano among grassy plains and you see it from afar, with snow on top even in the summer.

The North Egmont Visitor Centre is deep into the conservation area for Mt Taranaki, so either a car or an organised tour is required to access it. The centre has excellent interpretive material on the region and a stunning view of Mt Taranaki, plus providing access to numerous walking tracks. The road access to the conservation area is via good,... More

Nice place for hikes of differents lenghts. You can just go to the viewpoint or take some od the shorter walks 1-4 hour or go right to the top which could take a whole day

We planned to climb Mt. Taranaki summit in December, but unfortunately the weather was not that great. As an alternative, we did the shorter walk to the Pouakai Tarns (4h), which was well worth it. Start at the tramp at the end of Mangorei Rd, climb to Holly Hut and continue to the tarns. From there you can take pictures... More

I did the summit track in December with still quite a bit of snow at the top. It was challenging and a long trek to the top. It took 11 hours return with plenty of breaks in between. I wouldn't have done it on my own as it isn't safe if you don't know the route. Fortunately I went with... More

As experienced hikers, we were expecting this to be a breeze but were up for a suprise with all the loose volcanic rock and sand. Sometimes it felt like I was taking one step forward and two steps back in the steep sandy areas. The trip ended up taking us about 8 hours round trip despite being told if we... More
