Flea & Street Markets
What travellers are saying
- Todd sOkotoks, Canada4 contributionsMarket has a lot of trinkets in it. Most stalls have the same stuff or very similar. Vendors are all over you asking you to look and offering deals. Can be a bit overwhelming but they are nice folks just trying to make a living.Written 18 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Chrisdelo63Minneapolis, MN250 contributionsAfter a nice afternoon of church and then touring in Montego Bay we enjoyed the craft store. The people are very pleasant even if you do not buy. Yes there is pressure but in the end the is "respect" as they call it.Written 16 October 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Grover RPensacola, FL18,062 contributionsWe recently went to Falmouth on an NCL cruise and I fell in love with Jamaica here. Where some see unfamiliar and potential hazard, I see a quaint, historical English colonial grid Caribbean community. You don't travel to a different region to see another USA; you go to see something different. If you are in port, take time to walk beyond the sanitized, Disneyfied port and get into the real Falmouth.
Yes you will have to walk one block from the port terminal to the block with the market and square where you will be aggressively approached by many people wanting to guide you or sell you marijuana. However, after politely declining and walking that block, the town opens to a great Caribbean colonial community and one of the first things you see is a palm lined pedestrian street with this market.
I visited once by myself and once with my wife. As the earlier, reviewer says this is really a market place for locals. I simply breezed through. However, I did stop to take some pictures because the architectural prominence is significant and the commercial center on the square. There is no doubt the recent, enclosed and reproduction market has taken some of the commercial luster from this site. Still it has both the geographic and design of the town and it is great for pictures. Like so many Caribbean ports, it is that open air market that once defined these colonial communities and it is great to see Falmouth has not destroyed the history that made it great. Take the time to visit.Written 1 April 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Most of the vendors have the exact same crap, and they have all met and set their lowest prices, but you can still negotiate some of them below that price. The vendors closest to the parking and at the front are the ones who have been there the longest and try to rip you off the most. If you see something you like, bring a pen and write down the stall number so you can find it again. Watch out for the lady in the first stall, she is very aggressive and high in prices. We got the same stuff half price at stalls further back. But, most of it is made in China or India mass produced crap. There were one or two store that truly had unique items, and a few of the wood carvers were doing their crafting onsite. We went on a rainy day and about 3/4 of the stalls were open, and it was a little muddy but bearable.Written 12 April 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
