- JMShermanBirkenhead213 contributionsAs a reasonably fit 65 year old woman who hiked up Mount Sabinyo, Uganda in June (which involves quite a few rustic ladders) and the 3 passes in Nepal last November, I assumed correctly that I would be able to climb the Mulu Pinnacles without any trouble—our group of 5 left camp at 06.25 and were back at 13.35. I took the ascent at my own pace arriving at the summit 9 minutes behind the rest of my group (all under 35 years old) and actually found the last section with the ladders and the ropes the most enjoyable. The view at the top was sadly not as awe inspiring as I expected.
We were so lucky to have perfect weather (summiting was cancelled a few days before due to rain) and our guides were really good at allowing us to be independent of them. I didn’t feel that the gloves I had taken were necessary but I definitely needed my poles as I am very used to using them for this type of tree root and rocky ascent, so I very fortunately ignored the briefing advice not to take them. I also wore my old faithful heavy leather hiking boots which were not a problem at all on the ladders or terrain in the dry weather that we had.Written 27 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We started at 2.30 pm and ended at about 6pm. There is lots of walking but it almost entirely on boardwalks and there were several rest stops. So I would say it is tiring but not difficult. In our group we had 7 to 9 year old boys who managed to complete it with lots of encouragement. The walk is guided and we were able to see all sorts of interesting fauna like stick insects, giant millipedes on the way to the caves. After seeing the Deer cave, visitors are brought to the viewing deck to watch the millions of bats exiting the cave at sunset. I have never seen anything like that anywhere else in the world and it was truly spectacular. The weather was sunny when we started but when we emerged from the caves, it was pouring. This is not unusual, so please pack a poncho with you. Fortunately, the rain stopped and we were able to see the bat exodus. The Deer and Lang caves were not the most beautiful in Mulu but it was still pretty awesome exploring the huge caves as well as seeing, hearing and smelling the millions of bats in the caves. Definitely a must do when visiting Mulu.Written 11 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- richaKuala Lumpur, Malaysia2 contributionsIf you are a Speleology enthusiast with a knack to explore and adventure this is the place.
Nestled in years old jungle where you can reach only by flight from major cities of Malaysia, this part of Borneo is intriguing enough and would call for your imagination as tour guides will tell you how caves have evolved over years.
On one hand you will find Dear Cave which is home to a million bats whose "exodus" every evening will have tourists waiting with eyes set towards the sky, other one you will find Clearwater cave where longest 220 km underground river cuts through rocks gushing its way from gorge to merge with main river.
Not to forget breathtaking marvels of nature - limestone formations - stalactites and stalagmites that's certainly worth kms of walk or few steep staircases.
The 15 min boat ride would halt at a local market places where you can admire and buy handicrafts made by natives of this place. Thereafter boat will take you to WindShow cave after a short stair climb you would reach the mesmerizing wonders of limestone formation caused by erosion/corrosion etc. by seeping rainwater or growing vegetation (time to remember your school geography lessons :-))
Now time to experience another masterpiece - Clearwater Caves.
The stairs from boat jetty (it was more of a picnic spot with people enjoying and taking a dip in refreshing water of the river) were steep so may not be advisable for seniors or heart patients. The main entrance of cave was adorned by few rock formation with some vegetative growth that was supposed to be very rare and not be found elsewhere. As you gradually make way inside you hear the gushing sound that was made by world's longest 220 km river. There are almost 2-3 levels to be covered by stairs that shows you how high the river had flown years back. The lighting system is well arranged to show you the way and has proper pathways/stairs that you can follow to find your way our even if you are left behind by your group :-) . The guides are well trained and licensed and we booked the tours from Mulu Park site at reasonable price. The group size is capped and better to make bookings in advanced. The cave tour is a guided one.Written 17 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The walkway is suspended on cables spanning from one massive tree to the next, about 25-30 meters above the ground. The walkway is wobbly of course, but once visitors get used to it, it is easy to relax and enjoy the unique perspective on the tropical rain forest. Highly recommended.Written 24 August 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- happynomad79Singapore34 contributionsDid the 4D3N Mt Mulu trek in Mid May. It was a strenuous but generally safe trek. i would like to express my heartfelt thanks to my guide Mr. Christian and our porter (a very young man in his 20s) for making the trek possible and enjoyable for us. Christian who speaks excellent English is a very experienced guide and possesses a wealth of knowledge about the history, culture, flora and fauna of the area. He took great care of us during the hike, making sure that we were sound and good throughout the hike. Ask for Christian to be your personal guide if you happen to visit the national park!Written 22 May 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - phait_leeKuala Lumpur, Malaysia596 contributionsSarawak government has done really well in promoting Mulu and eco tourism at Sarawak.
Stayed at Marriott and took the shuttle everyday to the park. The park has activities for both the adventurous and non adventurous visitors. Just need to book ahead for those guided tours.
For the adventure caving, one needs to be above 16 years of age. And during rainy season, those adventure caving activities can get cancelled due to flooding in the caves.
Highly recommended to be back in nature.Written 22 July 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
