This was an excellent tour that nicely counter-balanced our more structured tours to individual, large, old and famous wineries. Mattia was our driver and tour guide, and he could not have been any friendlier or more knowledgeable. In his past life, Mattia spent several years as a winemaker in Tuscany, so he spoke from experience as well as from having personal knowledge of numerous winemakers in the Montalcino area.
There were 7 of us in the van, and Mattia kept up a running commentary while driving us safely through the rain and, in one case, avoiding a flooded road, finding another route, and lining up a different winemaker for later in the day. We had a great lunch, provided and served to us by the owner of a family-run winery at her dining room table, after which we visited an ancient and beautiful Benedictine Abbey.
Basically, we saw a lot, learned a lot from Mattia and three winemakers, enjoyed one another's company, napped on the way back, and would recommend this tour to anyone wanting to enjoy the relaxed, personal touch of one-on-one visits with Brunello di Montalcino winemakers.
