Very pleasant square with a large variety of historic buildings dating from the 1500s to art-nouveau early 20th century. Of course the Waag (weighing house) from 1528 stands out.

Unlike Rotterdam or Arnhem the city escaped major destruction during WOII. With a population of just over 100,000 inhabitants, Deventer has kept its laid back Dutch style ambiance and does not feel as 'cosmopolitanized' as the major cities in the west of the Netherlands.

Biggest improvement: the square is car free since 1993. So lots of terraces and space except for market days.

We took three kids, aged 2 to 6 through here on a recent weekend away and everyone really enjoyed it. There was some interesting history but also some fun hands-on activities for the kids. We went towards the end of the day and had the place to ourselves. Could easily have spent longer if we had allowed ourselves more time. The top floor toys and puppet theater were the highlights for our kids!

Behind a beautiful Renaissance style facade (original design from 1588) is the Deventer Tourist info. The location is called Penninckhoek, Penninck being the name of the merchant who ordered the construction of the building. Later a baptist church
    was established here.

The staff of the tourist office is friendly and helpful. They do have information on the surroundings of the city as well (excellent for cycling). During my visit (afterseason) the place was still very busy. Go there early. Open at 10 AM.

Completed in 1525, the colossal Lebuïnus church still dominates the skyline of Deventer. Two major changes occured during its 'life' time. The first during the Reformation in 1580 when the church interior was stripped of all its glamorous altars and idols. Also numerous colourful paintings and frescoes were removed or covered. The second significant change was at the beginning of the 20th century when all attached buildings were removed and the church with a new roof was left standing alone like a monument.

Gradually historians are changing their view on missionaries like Lebuïnus who in the 8th century was killed during efforts to christianize the indigenous Saxons. "Kerstening" (imposing christianity) often was a very violent process.

The so-called „swimming paradise“ of De Scheg is great fun for children. There are various water slides, dancing sessions in the water with children‘s songs, a current stream outside. The water is warm so children do not feel cold easily. For the youngest there is a babypool where they can play with sand and water (can get a bit messy).
The extensions of the building are not vast, which means there is limited space for seating and resting. During a weekend visit it was extremely crowded everywhere- pools, seating area, changing area. This makes it very difficult to keep appropriate distance. During covid 19 times the number of entrance tickets sold/ capacity of people allowed inside should be reduced to avoid this.

The cultural dimension of Deventer is illustrated by the new complex of the city hall ,in the old historic centre ...my first eye contact with the spectacular huge building was impressive .The new building breaks the historic surroundings ,it's like a modern contemporary window ,so close to the Grote Kerk ...old and new architecture are nicely combined ,the exterior facade looks like a piece of artwork ,depicting 2264 fingerprints of local citizens .The striking building is organized around two important squares.I entered inside just to take a nice photo, nobody asked me anything .The city hall has been awarded a special prize for its original architecture in 2017 ...

This tower is much like other church towers. A long climb up, with a view of the bells and additional mechanics along the way. From the top there is a view over the surroundings. Despite the rainy weather during my visit, it was clear that these views over Deventer are among the nicest in the Netherlands. One can see the IJssel river with its bridges, the windmill just across the bridge, and all the old buildings of Deventer, including the other churches, the town hall, the Geert Groote huis, the oldest (stone) building of the Netherlands, etc. I thought the very low entry door to the tower was also interesting.

The historical Bergkwartier/ district was built around a big church ,in the 12 th century. The church has a unique location on a hill .In 1206 the bishop of Riga came here to dedicate the church to St Nicholas ,the patron of merchants .The church was reconstructed in the 15 th century into a gothic basilica .Today the nice church is used for cultural activities ,the 13 th century paintings inside are great ,as well as the organ .There were a few visitors inside ,couldn't find any English information about it .I really enjoyed the medieval atmosphere around it .

What is now a park, used to be part of the fortifications of Deventer. The old straight moat (Buitengracht) is still visible, though Springer the architect decided for meandering it. The park that exists from 1889 faced many disasters. During WOII the Allied forces bombed the area mistakingly (target was the nearby railwaystation). A whirlwind struck in 1998 leading to a loss of many age old trees. However, the biggest menace seems to have been neglect and vandalism. Ever since the municipal authorities took drastic measures in 2020, the park has flourished.

English landscape style determines the design of the park which means the combination of open space and dense spots, dark and light resulting in a fluent varied experience. You get the feeling the park is much larger than it actually is.
