- Paul GPoynton, UK76 contributionsVery moving experience when we were there they are doing maintenance on the Menin gate so itās all covered but the ceremony goes on every night for the fallen a credit to all who organise this and well worth the tripWritten 9 February 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - JayWestYyLeeds, UK428 contributionsAn amazing and emotional place when they play the last post at 8pm every night . Get there early as it does get very busy and also hope you donāt get a rowdy school group which can happen and spoil the ambiance. We were lucky to see a lone Scottish serviceman also play the bagpipes at an extended event this week. Unfortunately the gate itself is under reconstruction so you canāt see it through the scaffolding. However a must visit if you are on the battlefields tour.Written 25 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Amazing museum and the new viewing area and artifacts are both interesting and thought provoking. Aswell as being an amazing museum it's the owners and staff that make this a wonderful visit. - Andrew FLiverpool, UK5 contributionsThere is so much going on here. Knowing about the history of the place, it's amazing to think that such a relatively small area hosted some of the most fierce battle of WWI. Have a good look around. Look down a lot, as there are markers everywhere for where the front was who was in control of it. Blast bunkers are everywhere, and various shelters. It's amazing and well worth the visit.
By the way, we decided to visit the WWI battlefields while staying in Brussels using a hire car rather than an organised tour. It is so much better, and cheaper in some cases. There was myself and my two teenage sons. Would have cost between Ā£200-300 with a tour company, but we paid Ā£70 for a car for the day, Ā£35 in petrol, and about Ā£0 in parking! Places we visited were mainly free (cemeteries, memorials etc). And driving around Belgium is easy! I even picked the car up during rush hour in the middle of Brussels and still got it back in one piece! Highly recommended.Written 22 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. I came here near the end of a trip around Europe with my two teenage sons, who both have an interest in WWII history. All the time we were there, we didn't say a word to each other. We wandered around, doing our own thing, and just took it all in. A lot of graves have names on, but there are some unnamed graves. As well as the graves there are memorials here too to various regiments. Hard to imagine that the now cemetery in the middle of a built area on the outskirts of Ypres was the centre of some major battles.Written 22 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Melania2000Ieper (Ypres), Belgium74 contributionsThis is one of the Canadian memorials that got me the most. The statue itself demands reflection, but also the smell of the Canadian pines all around the memorial really hit home. It is worth the small detour after/before visiting the Menin Gate in Ieper.Written 6 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
