Beautiful lake with amazing mountain scenery accessible by foot or cable car and chairlift from Pont d'Espagne. We took the cable car and chairlift as we travelled with a toddler and had a pushchair with us. The walk from the chairlift to the actual lake is around 15 minutes long and easy to walk however it was difficult to manouver the pushchair over some parts of the gravel path due to uneven patches with rocks. I therefore do not suggest going there with a pushchair if you're travelling with young children.

We visited in mid August and the lake was full with people and very crowded which takes away some of the beauty of the visit, but it was to be expected as its very easily accessible and very popular next to Pont d'Espagne. Overall still an enjoyable visit but I would recommend visiting during less busy months.

Pont d'Espagne is a location within the Pyrenees National Park situated 7km southwest of the mountain town of Cauterets. You can access by way of shuttle from Cauterets, vehicle (parking €8 for the day, €11 max after 12 hours) or by way of a hiking trail along a waterfall path.

Within the Pont d'Espagne grounds, there are paved walking trails that are family friendly leading to the delightful series of falls and cascades near the historic Bridge of Spain. There you will also find the charming Cafe Pont d'Espagne which also makes for a nice spot for an afternoon drink or light bite to eat after taking in the outdoors for a few hours.

There are further trails within the Pont d'Espagne grounds to see additional falls and wilderness grounds within the national park. You can additionally hike your way all the way to Lake Gaube. Alternatively, during warmer summer months, there is a cable car which your can use to ride up to higher grounds, for a brief 15-20 minute walk over to the lake.

Unfortunately, we only had a couple hours to spare during our visit to Pont d'Espagne as we combined it on a day trip with a morning visit to Gavernie. This definitely felt like a place to spend at least half a day if not the entire day, especially if you want to see/experience Lake Gaube as well. That what we will do instead the next time we are fortunate enough to visit this area of southern France.

Chemin des Cascades (The Waterfalls Pathway, in English) is a pathwalk, where you can see 4 waterfalls. It is possible to do an excursion by walk or drive by car and stop in every waterfall. we saw the 4 waterfalls, which are Boussès, du Pas de l'Oors, Cerisey and Lutour). For me, the second and the third waterfalls are the best, both very nice. A very good excursion to do with children by walk or car.

We recently made a day trip into the Pyrenees National Park during our stay in Lourdes and much enjoyed spending time seeing Cirque de Gavarnie (morning), a natural amphitheatre at the end of a lovely valley south of the mountain village of Gavarnie as well as Pont d'Espagne (afternoon), a nature area with waterfalls and hiking trails up to and round Lake Gaube, around 7km from Cauterets.

The drive into the national park from Lourdes is very simple, you pass through charming little mountain villages with plenty of shops and restaurants. The scenery is beautiful throughout the day.

Our hike into Cirque de Gavarnie took just over 3 hours point-to-point. There is paid parking in the village. Similarly there is paid parking at the entrance to Pont d'Espagne, where we spent another couple of hours before making our way back to Lourdes, arriving back at our apartment by late afternoon. It was a rewarding day trip and gave us much consideration for making a proper visit into the Pyrenees National Park for a multiple day trip in the future.

A beautiful spot for swimming, fishing and hiking. It's a two hours walk from the la Fruitière restaurant car park. The Estom mountain cabin is right next to the lake and offers food, drinks and accommodation. Better book in advance for the accommodation as it is very popular

Cascade du Cerisey is one of several waterfalls situated along the road (D290) between the small mountain town of Cauterets and Pont d'Espagne. There are a couple of sharp switchbacks where the road makes hairpin turns where you will see the falls just off the side of the road.

In the direction towards Pont d'Espagne, we found a small pull off on the side of the road with enough from for probably 6 or 7 vehicles roughly 50 metres past the falls. You can stop there and walk down to roadside viewpoint where you have very good up close view of a small gorge and falls. Then back to the vehicle so you can continue onward for your visit to Pont d'Espagne and Lake Gaube.

We stopped in here hoping to learn about the area and perhaps get some information about scenic places to visit or walk. Very disappointed as the employee was too busy chatting to his friend to even acknowledge we came into the building. There's much more information to be found elsewhere. This place was a waste of time.

I love this station because it is small but also big enough to enjoy a full day of skiing.
