It is a beautiful Cathedral with an amazing amount of stained glass windows. Must stop if you are in Leon. That being said, not sure if I would make a detour to just visit. And still not sure if it's worth the entry fee of 7 euros.

The cave tour was very cool. We drove over 1.5 hours out of our way to see it. The tour we joined were all Spanish-speaking tourists. Unfortunately our Spanish is limited. Our guide, Alexia (I hope I spelled her name correctly) was so kind to give a quick overview in English at every stop. She was wonderful and sweet. Highly recommend her and these unique caves!!

We pre-booked an English language tour before our arrival in Leon. Pre-booking was probably not needed since there were only 5 of us on the guided tour.
The Chalice, 11th century frescoes and the other museum displays were exceptional. This is a hidden gem and the cost was nominal.

A stunning site, with good signage at the open air viewing platforms at the Orellan Mirador. We went inside the tunnels, which was very interesting and well worth the small entrance fee. We all had to wear helmets because the rocky roof gets very low in places, but it is quite well lit. The visitors' centre in the village of Las Medulas has a leaflet in English, if you ask at the desk. The Roman technology and engineering was astonishing.

This is a quaint village, which retains its 16th-century architecture, including roads poorly paved with cobblestones. However, the Maserati parked in front of one of the houses, indicates that the village has departed from its mostly agricultural past and now caters to tourists. it is quite lovely nonetheless.

After the gloom of the Cathedral this was the antidote. Loved Gaudi ever since I visited Barcelona and this visit increased my admiration for the man. The attention to detail combining practicality - door knobs for example - with style, and less than perfect ground conditions with innovative solutions is something that a few modern designers need to take on board. (OK I have a particular grouse at the moment about modern hotel bathroom taps and basins that look good but leak)
Anyway just pay a visit to Casa Botines and appreciate what Gaudi did for his clients... the lucky people.

Yesterday, I travelled back in time! I went to Herrería de Compludo with my friends and we decided to go in, which resulted in a mesmerisingly magical; Manuel an actual real blacksmith made the place come to life and show us how he works with fire and hiron. Howl's Moving Castle came to my mind! I highly recommend it! Beautiful!

While staying in the small towns of Potes and Cangas de Onis we took the opportunity to do quite a bit of driving in the Picos. Having driven quite a lot in the Alps and Pyrenees, the comparisons here are most positive.

Although the Picos is a much smaller area, the drives were exceptional with good quality roads and stunning scenery, and some of our drives were as good as we have experienced anywhere in the world.
This is a fabulous area to explore.

The historic center with its streets and alleyways has large pedestrian-only parts, which make it a pleasure to roam. We enjoyed simply walking around and exploring the area.

Antiguo Convento de San Marcos is a jewel surrounded by a large pedestrian plaza. The origins of this magnificent monument lie in the 12th century and finished in the 16th century. The impressive and ornamental plateresque facade makes this monument one of the finest examples of Renaissance architecture of Spain and Europe.
