As a passionate Australian birder, Costa Rica has delivered many avian gems. Amongst these, there’s one species that shines just that bit brighter — the resplendent quetzal.
This is a true ‘grail bird’ for us, especially me, and hence we needed a skilled and sensitive guide. We found that person in Diego.
Diego’s laid back style does not diminish his focused awareness of the field. He is a charming and attentive host with abundant passion and deep knowledge of Costa Rican ornithology.
He knows the area well and worked at our pace, stopping to support our appreciation of all our interests (including fungi) and was able tune into our individual needs as well as group agenda.
You know you’re with a birder that knows his ‘patch’ when the pace is casual but consistent. Before we knew it, we were at the foot of a towering avocado and looking at my first ever resplendent quetzal. I was overjoyed at this moment, completely gobsmacked at the bizarre beauty of the bird and also grateful for Diego’s help with the spotting scope. He helped us get great pictures (go the iPhone/scope combo) and seemed to enjoy our obvious delight.
My friends and I recommend a walk in the woods with Diego. He’s a young guy that deserves your support which he will return with a memorable birding experience in this beautiful country.
