Every one of these towns has a central park. There are many shops and restaurants around the one is Xela. Yes there is an old(Catholic) church (the oldest in the Americas is in the nearby town of Salcaja. I am in a boutique hotel a few blocks from Central Park so it makes for easy dining options and bars all around the park

It’s pretty and hard to reach the top but worth it. It’s a bummer that there is so much trash on mountain.

Was a 45 minute hike, incredible views!! You have to go early to catch the sunrise, on the weekends the Mayans do their rituals.

Great views of the city and a fun slide. Several families were enjoying the park during a Sunday afternoon. The area is surrounded by trees and nature.

Be careful several locals cautioned me to not hike the mountain alone because there is high probability of being robbed while walking up. I had no problems whatsoever.

The church is so beautiful inside an out. I visited on a Saturday morning and spent about a half hour walking around inside and out.

Beautiful museum. We got a tour by a very knowledgeable and delightful women who was one of the founder of the museum. She wore her traditional Guatemalan clothing. This little museum is a gem. She knew so much about textile and traditions and the history of the different Mayan ethnic groups . It was just beautiful. I wish the museum had more funding. If the museum appears closed, just wait a few minutes. It is open and well worth the few minutes of stand by before she opens the door because she might be giving the tour.

We left early in the morning with our guide, hiking only by the light of the full moon. What a reward when we arrived at the destination, a look-out over what appeared to be a quiet (smoking) volcano. Less than an hour later, a deep rumble and then it blew! Amazing sight.

I scheduled a tour for me and two friends. The tour was incredible as we were by ourselves. After the tour we did the rum tasting experience along with the bottle make experience. The tour guide explained the process of making rum along with the Botran history.

During the tasting experience we sampled 4 Rums which were pared with different cheeses and chocolate.

Afterwards the tour guide walked me through making my own private recipe bottle of rum with a personalized label with a corked and wax seal to bring home. I strongly recommend the tour and both tasting and bottle making experiences.

It is a beautiful piece of architecture in Quetzaltenango from 1895. Its façade, French type, has big imposing pillars for a magnificent entrace to the events held in it. Inside is divided in several areas for epectators and has a capacity for 1000 visitors. At its exterior there are several monuments to appreciate and at the interior sourranding the theater, several pieces of art. Although, the maintance of the theater has been difficult, there has been a recent restoration by some contributors. Is still on renovation process at the dressing rooms, the stage floor, electrical systems, bathrooms, etc. But is a beautiful visit!

I went tot the art gallery because it was nearby. it was a bit weird. the art is good, the space is weird. if you can get in for free, definitely go. if they want to charge you, i would not go.

But not empty! Rodrigo Dias has his studio in the building. He is an excellent artist on the brink of much greater recognition. Visit his studio in the Railway Station, talk with him about art and the world ( he is widely traveled ) and, by all means, buy one of his paintings. It is a sound investment in a wonderful artist and one that will likely reward oneself in the future.

Beautiful, big city hall in Quetzaltenango. Its construction began in 1812 and was concluded in 1958. With many salons and areas to appreciate. Also beautiful gardens and corridors surrounding the site. Many stories over the years during its construction. Each area has many details in ceilings, floors, steps, corridors, rooms, etc. Although at the second floor, due to the many earthquakes, there are some cracks and damages at the walls, which need to be repaired. Many pieces of art and furnishings. It is a magnificent piece of architecture to visit while in Quetzaltenango.
