Kula Kai Caverns Ocean View
#2 of 161 Nature & Parks in Island of Hawaii
We visited the cavern prior to heading to Volcano National Park and I'm glad we did it that way as we learned so much about how everything was formed that it all made a lot more sense than it would have.
We saw the tubes in the Volcanco park and were really glad we did Kula Kai.

Great place to snorkel even though on day we went the swell was up and made it a bit difficult a bit hard to find but worth it has a park next to it where you can spend day relaxing.
This is one of Hawaii’s state-managed parks/beaches, and as such offers nice restrooms, outdoor showers, and good parking.

It is a bit of a hike in to it, (past the state park beach which is a super easy walk to) half of the hike is an easy walk, half is over rough, sharp lava.
You must take the direction of the Kekaha Kai state park (highway 19, between miles marker 90-91) in first (a second road exists to join by the North this beach between miles 88-89 but adventure in 4WD car in pers...

The Monument has more sea life than Two Step (next to historical park), but has only two ways to access-kayak and hiking from atop the Napo'opo'o Road (you'll see cars parked near the trail head).
But we still enjoyed the snorkelling, as well as the relaxing park, beautiful view and friendly, quaint community.

You can visit Hapuna Beach State Park (lots of public parking) another great beach and walk (under a mile) along the Ala Kahakai trail to this beach.

This is the path less traveled, and can give you a beautiful feeling of oneness with nature as you gaze out on the valley, surf, cliffs and trees.
Better yet, park near the lookout and take the 20 minute hike into the valley and enjoy one of the best black sand beaches in Hawai`i.

Walking around Volcano National Park is amazing and interesting but going for a Lava Expedition is the most exciting, beautiful and awesome thing we have ever done.
It's truly awe inspiring and humbling to see the sheer power of nature, even if you cannot get that close.
#19 of 161 Nature & Parks in Island of Hawaii
This "place of refuge' (pu'uhonua) is a beautifully renovated and preserved historical park where you can explore on your own with the park guide (1/2 mile walk) or with talks from the park rangers.
It is also a very quiet and peaceful place to visit and walk around, with both amazing views of the ocean and equally spectacular things to see in the park itself (a huge lava rock wall that has stood for centurie...

Look for the mile marker 69 turn left if your'e coming from Kona then take the first right and drive until you see the gate with parking, park your car, and walk towards the ocean.
After that, the beach got a little more crowded with people coming over to our beach from the park but never excessively.
