The road to (and around) Hana lived up to my expectations (and then some). Our family of 4 (two teens) loved it! Weather was perfect. We double booked a vrbo for 2 nights so we could slow down and fully enjoy everything (we actually only stayed one night as we left for West Maui around 5 pm the second night). We did not start the drive super early like most everyone suggested (due to the fact we were staying overnight & our son was exhausted from the previous day's activities:). We arrived at the start of the drive around 11:15. We encountered very little to no traffic in front of us and only some traffic of those returning from Hana. We pulled off the road for locals who were behind us (remember they are probably on their way to or from work). I do get car sick, so I planned accordingly (no alcohol or spicy food the night before, patch behind my ear, crackers and ginger ale for the ride). Since we stopped the car a lot & didn't have to drive in stop-and-go traffic, it really would not have been an issue for me either way (but I didn't want to take any chances:). We skipped Ho'okipa Beach & Twin Falls (saw 3 years ago). Favorite stops are subjective, but for me...we stopped at "Halfway to Hana" for shave ice and the best pineapple smoothie I have ever had. Wailua Falls was great and empty in the early am. Pipiwai trail and Waiʻānapanapa's black sand beach were TRULY AMAZING!!! I would drive straight back to Hana just for those two places alone. I enjoyed experiencing Hana in the evening as it was very quiet & peaceful (unless you go to Hana Farms restaurant for live music, delicious pizza, and very friendly locals:).
I did A LOT of research & planning for this (and all parts of our HI trip). I think it really paid off as we got a lot out of our precious time in & around Hana. I don't think I would ever try to do it one very long day. However, if that is all you have, plan/decide what is most important for you to see/do, go SUPER EARLY, and just know you most likely won't see/do it all (and you'll most likely be w/many others trying to do the same thing as you:). We did use Gypsy auto guide. Download it before you go-strongly recommend this guide! I would do it all again-perfection!!!

The widest section of the beach is in front of the Sheraton. This also happens to be where black rock is located. I highly recommend snorkeling around black rock and if your feeling adventurous jumping off black rock. I saw 2 sea turtles and multiple tropical fish. There are many ocean activities and adventures at this beach: surf lessons, paddle boarding, sunset cruises, etc..

    Aloha!
Went at about 3p with my 14 year old. Was not blasting like crazy, but was definitely worth it. Very easy for him on the way up and down. Saw plenty of younger kids doing it. Is it doable? Absolutely. Is it difficult? It can be, especially on the way up. I was exhausted.
My son and I only did it in slippas so don’t let footwear, or lacktherof, stop you.
    Mahalo!

Always one of our favorite beaches on our trips to Maui. Short, powerful waves crash of the shore making a lovely sound. If you get just past the break, you can float in the water and the waves roll up. Not many young kids come to this beach. The waves are much too strong for them. We saw a group of dolphins or porpoise playing around and jumping out to the water while we were swimming out there.
Suggest bringing a sun umbrella, cooler with some ice cold drinks, and lots of sunscreen. There is not much shade.

This is a gorgeous beach in Maui which my family and I thoroughly enjoyed, but be careful because the water can get quite treacherous - I got seriously dumped here (even though my photos don't show massive waves). You also need to be careful with the rip because it can start pulling you towards the rocks which makes it more dangerous, but even so we loved this beach and had a lot fun with our boogie boards and body surfing. I also really appreciated the fact that there was a lifeguard on duty and a beautiful park with lawn you could sit and have picnics, outdoor showers and toilets and parking nearby too. I love this part of Maui and highly recommend going to Kamaole Beach III (or any of the three Kamaole beaches)!!

The view here is unique, wide open. The building itself was modern and super cool to see. The staff were friendly, beer and food are great!

This was our favorite beach! We spent a couple days exploring the island and many beaches and this was by far the best. Parking is easy and free, sand is clean and water was perfect, just gentle enough for little kids to be able to enjoy it without parents freaking out the whole time. One drawback when comparing would be snorkeling. You can't complain about pure sand, and I am not but there was only sand. I have read about snorkeling way further out and along the rockier edges but I didn't get there which was fine. We loved the area and if we get the chance to return to Maui, this is where we will want to be.

If your looking for cheap souvenirs or unique items this is the place. Besides clothing and packaged food items they also have food booths for some quick bites. Make sure you try surfing girls shaved ice. It was so good. They also had a few booths with antiques/collectibles. The admission is .50$ and is well worth it.

When planning your trip to the summit, make sure to include a warm jacket on your checklist! On a clear day, it gets extremely windy and bitterly cold; however, the awe-inspiring views you're treated to (especially as you ascent above the clouds) are guaranteed to make you forget the cons about traveling to the crater. It's like being a on a different planet altogether. The trip starts out with lush views of the ocean and valley; then as the elevation increases, the landscape dramatically changes. Be aware though that if you wish to see the sunrise, a RESERVATION IS REQUIRED. Spots become available at 7 AM Hawaiian time two days before your planned visit date. The drive to and from the crater is relatively easy; however, it involves a lot of hairpin turns and there are no lights to guide you in the dark. Nevertheless, it's worth a visit.

My wife and I had a pleasant afternoon at the Maui Ocean Centre. Our favourite areas were ‘The Living Reef’ and the exhibit about Kaho’olawe. We spent about 5 hours, which felt about right. I should say that we are the type to take our time and read most of the interpretive material.
The restaurant had good food. I would recommend it to adults or families.

This is a fantastic snorkel spot! But it’s a ROCKY beach. No sand so wear good shoes. And flippers walking out to the water. We saw 3 turtles! We felt the far left side was the best snorkeling or of your a strong swimmer wayyy out to the right. The jungle you walk through to get to the beach is AMAZING!! Video/photograph that whole walk. The sounds are amazing.

Unbelievable, too big to take a picture. Nice shade in the middle of town. Largest tree in ground size in the world maybe? Takes up a city block.

This bay has many interesting geological features, tide pools, and turtles. It is not as crowded as other beaches. Great spot for snorkeling.
