What travellers are saying
- lindsaysimonsonNew Paltz, NY13 contributionsFirst off, we are experienced hikers and found this to be a TOUGH hike. Definitely allow yourself a day or two in Lake Atitlan or Antigua to acclimate to the elevation. Even then, you’ll almost definitely feel the effects of the elevation. It took us 4 hours and was almost entirely at least a 45 degree climb through fine volcanic stones. Second, definitely go with a guide. The trail forks off multiple times and without a guide we certainly would have gotten lost. The guide companies also have a shelter and campfire at base camp, both necessary and worth it because it will almost certainly be cold and raining during the afternoon and evening. That said, this is a truly remarkable experience. We had the most amazing views when the clouds cleared around 11pm and 3pm and could hear the volcano erupting all night. This volcano is extremely active, erupting about every 20 minutes. We did the hike to the summit in the morning, which also provides amazing views if you’re lucky with the weather. If the weather isn’t great, staying at base camp will probably afford you some spectacular views as well because the volcano is more likely to be clear. Definitely pack good hiking boots, extra socks, warm pants, gloves, hat, and rain coat for base camp and the summit. Hiking poles or sticks will save you. Take your time and enjoy!Written 1 May 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- David L3 contributionsAltitude sickness can be a concern here. I was fine, my wife had to ride a horse ( about $40 for the climb and descent) . We started at 6,000 feet and climbed to 7,200.
Some parts of the trail were steep and challenging others were slightly challenging. If you're not used to altitude try belly breathing. Look it up, it helps.
Some of the people in our group had a pace that kept up from the lava flow, roasting marshmallows and pizza. We had a well-trained guide.Written 1 May 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - robjustrobLethbridge, Canada1,792 contributionsi bought these choclate discs that i didnt realize are for making hot chocolate, you simply drop them into hot water or hot milk and they dissolve. they are great. too bad i was eating them like a big cookie, lolWritten 5 December 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- Kelly LToronto, Canada41 contributionsEasy and short hike from the main town. We used the marked trail (off of 1a Avenida Nte) to go both up and down, even though there is another path down with signs saying “SALIDA.” This other path looked poorly maintained, so we thankfully decided to go back down the way we came.
During our travels we met another girl who did this hike, but went back down the path marked “SALIDA.” Unfortunately she encountered a man with a machete and was robbed of her belongings including cellphone. She was obviously still very upset and shaken telling us this story, so just wanted to warn others to not take this path down.Written 13 May 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - ilovelanguageEscazu, Costa Rica108 contributionsReally cool museum to visit. It is more like 6 different museums: one for silver, one for chocolate, one of the ruins of the church and its relics and crypts, one of claywork and candles, one of architecture that had a 'then and now' photograph exhibit to show old and current photos of places in Antigua and in the capitol, and the Vical museum, which had pottery, urns and figurines from ancient times (like 2000 and 3000 years ago!) alongside modern pieces that take inspiration or 'mirror' the ancient works of art. This last museum was a real treat! The space was amazing, the lighting was proper and the pieces were breathtaking. Highly recommend this museum to all Antigua visitors.Written 13 April 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- Traveller of the world1,112 contributionsThis is not beautiful or picturesque but atmospheric! Always buzzing with activity and a central square. Not the cleanest. You can't miss it!Written 29 March 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.

- Dorsa FDar es Salaam, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania4 contributionsWe worked with Caoba Farms to host our welcome dinner for our wedding. Little did we know that this was the first private event they had ever held, but you would never be able to tell with how SEAMLESS everything went. First the food was the best we had in Antigua. We offered both vegan and meat options, and all of our meat eaters ended up going back for vegan seconds because the food was that good! People were literally talking about the soup for days! It was such a fun great and unique atmosphere to host a welcome dinner to Antigua! We were worried people would have a hard time since the floor was dirt, but honestly the ambience and the place was so pretty it didnt end up mattering! This is a great place for events because it also has a small stage for speeches, and it feels so private and exclusive! A must visit in Antigua!Written 4 May 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.

- robjustrobLethbridge, Canada1,792 contributionsthis old church is beautiful but really shines at night. it presents some pretty good opportunities to take some remarkable pictures, too bad we couldnt get inside it.Written 5 December 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- LuizDutraNetoRio de Janeiro, RJ8,613 contributionsThe majestic "Volcán de Agua" dominates the beautiful landscape around Antigua! Standing at 3,670 mts, it is the perfect backdrop for pictures at the famous "Arco de Santa Catalina", another major landmark of Antigua. The volcano has had no historical eruptions but, back in 1541, a devastating mudflow coming from it destroyed everything on its way. A lake has been formed at its crater and coffee is planted on its lower slopes. Hiking is possible, but at your own risk, as it is quite tiring and there are reviews relating sad happenings while climbing, envolving assaults and robbery. Great pictures - from afar - will mean fond memories to take home! Enjoy!Written 20 August 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.

- robjustrobLethbridge, Canada1,792 contributionsthere is an admission fee if you want to go in and walk among the ruins and see them close up, but i had my drone with me and made a couple of videos of them from above and flying through them. - efloweMontreal, Canada3 contributionsThe private one on one class given by Estelle is great. She made it easy to learn and understand even if my knowledge in Spanish is very limited. She was also very caring and patient. And Danielo was also very nice and professional. Well worth the experience. Thank you!Written 19 February 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
