- gplow97KL186 contributionsArrived at the entrance of the parks late afternoon. It was deserted and no signs of any monkeys or birds. On entering the mangrove park an endless wooden platform lays in front and stretches deep into the mangrove. After walking for quite a distance came upon the river and also saw the tower. hearing the monkeys call but did not see any. The wooden planks are missing here and there and thus it is not safe for children and dangerous in a way as anyone could falls into the mud below. The tower was also closed up with missing ladders/stairs. The wooden platform and tower are in a deplorable state and not recommended for families or visitors. After carefully making our way out, we spotted group of monkeys outside the entrance. Someone have come to feed these monkeys. See photos attached.Written 14 August 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- snoozingKuala Lumpur, Malaysia73 contributions2D1N tour package with Nine Island Agency. It's a village of supposedly 400 people. Fishing is the main trade, with tourism coming in second perhaps.
Let's get the unpleasantness out of the way:
[ - ] accommodation unit had very little sound damping materials - noise from other guests intruded into the room, and an early morning drizzle over the roof could be clearly heard in the room;
[ - ] flooding in the village is apparently an annual event - and rubbish would get washed up and be deposited practically everywhere;
[ - ] stray dogs were abound, and so it wasn't surprising to find their droppings on the road too;
[ - ] with local residents busy going about their daily chores to make a living, public areas in the village were left unattended to i.e. rubbish, stray dogs & droppings in clear sight.
So, what are its saving grace?
[ + ] private properties with customer touch-points (e.g. aquarium, designated restaurants, snack shop, cafe & bar, accommodation) tend to better maintained;
[ + ] accommodation provided was basic (room without a view), but the basics worked well (e.g. air-conditioner, water heater, hair-dryer, toilet, lights and dimmer);
[ + ] fresh seafood & simple local dishes (e.g. nasi lemak, congee, prawn crispies, fresh coconut juice) were tasty (on the levels of home-cooked food);
[ + ] tour agency well organized in coordinating the experience for the many visiting groups (waiting and over-runs happened, but with plenty of waiting space and a constant sea breeze, those were tolerable);
[ + ] "blue tears" (bioluminescent planktons) viewing up close (& touching) experience on boat;
[ + ] a humorous tour on electric cart around key points of village, including the river view toilet; conducted in Mandarin only.
One of the supposed highlight of the package was the photo session (aka sky mirror), and the value of this experience really depended on one's inclination for group photos. In essence, it was a curated photo experience which involved at least 2 very supportive crew members setting up the photo tent, providing guidance on poses, taking and sharing the photos.
The other highlight was the "blue tears" (bioluminescent planktons) viewing & touching experience. These took place on a boat. No tears of joy, but it was an interesting discovery.
The village's own aquarium housed, among others, big fishes (e.g. giant groupers, arapaima, catfish), and was a hit with the kids. Entrance fee included with package, otherwise it would have been RM12 for kids, and RM15 for adults.
Package was worth a go. Local home-cooked style food (mostly seafood) was surprisingly tasty. Special mention goes to prawn crispies, fried sweet potato and red bean soup.Written 15 September 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - James M42 contributionsFirstly, this is LUMUT branch near Pangkor.
Overall - very good. A really kind, helpful team but with a bit of a 'guys' vibe. A nice dive but not recommended for beginners due to currents and low visibility. Reasonable accommodation for just an overnight stay. Planning the whole day could be improved to make better use of time.
Before the full review - an important note about the google reviews. I was told by the team that in the last year, the centre has undergone new management. The older reviews may not be relevant. Comments below about professionalism are different from what I experienced.. Hopefully customers will add more recent comments...
Firstly, professionalism. Generally good, but some of the sizing at the shop was rushed. They didn't have big enough large wetsuits for me or my girlfriend. All equipment looked in good condition. They let us assemble our gear and then checked it for us. There was a brief brief with a recap of signals. However, you should add a laminated map as well as some pictures of the species we should look for. It would be easy to do. Underwater safety was difficult as vis was c3m. We lost a guy and had to surface on the first dive. I had to ask for a torch, but given low vis a torch should be provided to everyone.
Secondly, the dives. We did 2 days. 3 dives per day at a total of 3 different sites. I think it cost me 1400RM or about $340. Mostly good weather. It's a long boat journey there (c40mins) in open water, so it can get choppy.
Honestly, this is not the place to go if you are new to diving. The visibility is often low (3-7m) and some of the sites have moderate currents. This can make it very challenging for a beginner. However, for someone with a dozen dives in their log book it's a really fun level of challenge. You have to put a lot more effort into your dive (as opposed to the clear blue of Thailand or Bali) and so you get more out. I feel much more confident in the water knowing that I dealt with some of that challenge (like losing your team in 3m visibility!). Strongly recommended for beginner divers getting ready to do advanced. Highlights include nudibrach, octopus and a beautiful anemone garden!
Thirdly, the boat. Standard SE Asian speedboat. One deck, sun shade, some snacks provided (fried banana balls that day, mix of soft drinks - all free), ladder for entry. No toilet.
Fourth, overall care. Mixed blessings here. On the one hand, they took really good care of us. Met us very late at the accommodation, took us to breakfast, brought snacks on the boat, took us to a local market for dinner, recommended food and paid for it all. They also drove us to the ferry when we went home. Really good all-inclusive service.
However, two problems to work on: (1) It has a 'lads' feel - it needs a womans touch. Too much fried food and grease. Get some fruit for the snacks, find somewhere a bit classier for dinner, give it a little more class... (2) You need to plan the whole day more logically. The time at the shop sizing equipment was rushed. We went hotel-breakfast-hotel and wasted time. There was also lots of waiting at the marina - call the tractor man in advance to get the boat in position. We could have organized dinner a bit better so we didn't have so much food! Sit down and plan it out to make the day more efficient.
Fifth, the 'hostel'. Considering it was included in the price, it was good. Double bed, air con, clean sheets, wardrobe, shared bathroom, wifi. Nothing amazing but fine for a dive shop. Need some photos online.
That's enough...Written 1 February 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
