The functional building on Georgetown's main road is a fine example of late 20th century Malay architecture which you can still find all over the town but usually in poor condition. Preserved foods in bright colours are sold on the ground floor and the second hand booksellers from down the block are now gathered upstairs with some clothing too.

We hired a driver right outside of the cruise terminal. This was one of the stops after visiting a few temples. The staff was very helpful and we enjoyed the many samples that helped decide which souvenir coffee to purchase as gifts. The prices to me was reasonable and being we were on a cruise with limited time in port we were not at liberty to shop for the best deals for good coffee. The coffee and juice packets we purchased were enjoyed and praised by those that we gifted them too.

This is a beautiful little gift shop, quite unlike the usual run of gift shops in old Penang. These are gifts with a difference, unique and stylish. For example, we purchased a woman’s purse and a glasses case - both made from old kimonos. It is that sort of place. You can find lovely, unique gifts and home wares that are of excellent quality and reasonably priced.

Excellent service from Jonathan in getting my wife's engagement ring repaired. He spent time with me to assist in picking the right diamond and gave good advice.
The workmanship was very good which is made more surprising as the ring is tiny.

The owner is very passionate about tea. he taught us the difference between white vs black tea and everything in between, and was really good in teaching us how to make tea and recommending tea.

we had tea there for hours, as well as bought tea back for our family. the white tea was really good.

One block from busy Penang street is a traditional shop specializing in hand made Malaysian batik in cotton, viscose and real silk, which are more valuable than factory printed Indonesian polyester. The shop offers personal service, a man's shirt from the stock fabrics in your own size will be ready in 3 days with a small surcharge. There are smaller souvenir items, pouches, bags, hats and clothing for children and women too. Different kinds of batik fabrics are also sold by meter.

We just love areca books. Enormous good selection of books on Penang and Malaysia, mostly by local writers, can be found here - from heritage, culture, arts, horror stories, love to politics. Inviting atmosphere and strategic location with tourist attractions all within walking distance (Armenian street, Sun Yat Sen museum, Lebuh Acheh mosque just to name a few). We bought one book but will come back for more :)

Stop by this beutifull shop just to have look,
The shop is so lovely with very reasonable prices, i stayed over a hour just looking picking out what i wanted with no sales pressure, the owner of this shop is very honest with very good knowlege of what he is selling, i saw some customers just looking without buying and it was not a problem,
I felt very comfortable in his shop, and his 5 month old son is super cute too !

Now, rather than following a bunch of zombie-like folk with their arms outstretched holding smartphones in alleyways in search of fading ‘art’ on crumbling walls, visitors in Penang should visit this gallery. It’s filled with stunning locally designed arts & crafts and you’ll often come across the talented artists & designers there too.

Near the Armenian street food courts is a small shop with interesting local souvenirs and artefacts. The watercolour paintings of Chinatown are originals and wood carvings old. An enamel Tiffin box for food deliveries is a reminder of 100 years old habit resurrected. Life is a circle as the owner said philosophically.

Thought their was a cafe part toenjoy a tea or coffee. No luck, this is merely a shop selling their chocolate and coffee products. You get a brief history of how chocolate and coffee are produced. Then the sales pitch, though enough samples to make it bareable.Alright visit.

There is now only 1 Gerakbudaya bookshop in Penang. It has an eclectic mix of genres. You can have coffee at the back of the shop - photo attached.
