- PoleinaholeSwitzerland2,056 contributionsI contacted Mrs. Eng to dive, only to discover that there is no diving in Kuching from September to April as the visibility and currents are bad during the monsoon. I was sorry to have missed the WWII Japanese wrecks but will have to come back to dive here. Sarawak is a great place to visit with much to see.
So she took me on two day trips. One to Bako National Park and the other to the Orangutan Rehab Center, Jong’s Croc Farm and to the Cultural Village. Her prices were fair.
Mrs. Eng was always on time and was a delightful companion. As others have noted, she is a treasure of a person to meet. Strong willed, always in a good mood and caring. She taught herself to swim at 40 in order to dive!
Mrs. Eng also showed me her boat and her dive shop which is opposite the cultural center. It’s a simple place in a container which she has painted herself. Really, she does everything herself...
Closest hotel if you are diving is the Damai Beach Hotel. If on a budget, there are clean dorm beds located in a nearby hostel. Mrs. Eng will pick you up in her spacious 4WD and bring you to her shop.
Mrs. Eng was also patient when I wanted to eat Arabic food but the address Trip Advisor had for it was wrong. We eventually ended up finding the right address and having a nice dinner instead of lunch there. She was happy to try a new place to learn and share with other vegetarian clients.
A really delightful person. I would just bring my dive kit if you have some as you might not get as much rental equipment choice as at a bigger dive shop.

We went to see Hie Maru and Katomi Maru, two unique Japanese WWII wrecks in the middle of the ocean.
Saw barracudas, Remoras, batfish, pufferfish. They say you can see whale sharks sometimes as well.
Only 2 divers, it felt like an adventure and yet very tailor-made at the same time.Written 9 September 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
