Kuching
Can thoroughly recommend a night here, but take plenty of cash.
As it appeared quite easy to get to from Kuching, we decided to go it alone. We booked the overnight stay through the
Sarawak Forestry website lots of information on it regarding getting there and the trails.
We took a taxi to the boat port, which took about 40 minutes. At the boat port, there are no set departure times; you wait until there are enough people to make it worthwhile for the boatman to take you.
We found a Spanish couple to share with, and had to agree with them on a time to return. Then we had to pay the park fees in cash, and also the boatman, which more or less took all the cash we had. On hindsight, we paid more for the boat than we expected as there were only four of us.
The boat ride was great, and our accommodation was decent - we booked a Type 6 Forest Lodge, which came with two bedrooms, each having a shower and toilet. Obviously it was basic, but quite roomy, and cost approx GBP25.00 for the night. However, everything at the site has to be paid for in cash, which was potentially a huge problem for us. We managed to make a bank transfer to the Restaurant, and they gave us the cash, but it was very fiddly, hence my recommendation to take cash. Everything is really cheap there.
There are several trails, we tried Trail 4, which was 800m each way. It took us about two hours to do 500m, so we turned back. The trail was supposed to be one of the easier ones, but I found it difficult (being 63 with arthritic knees) because there is quite a bit of climbing and negotiating tree roots. It was beautiful, but we didn't really see any wildlife.
Bako also has beautiful beaches, with amazing cliffs and rock formations. Swimming is not permitted, because the sea is inhabited by Estaurine Crocodiles.
We did the guided night walk, which was fantastic with three guides shining their lights and picking out animals for us.
We saw a Proboscis monkey, green vipers, a Buffy fish owl, a silver langur and a flying lemur, as well as frogs and spiders and scorpions. I was apprehensive about doing it, but was assured it was on boardwalks around the site, and I was absolutely fine.
There's a cafeteria on site, which has plenty of food options, and is very cheap.
I would thoroughly recommend staying overnight at Bako National Park.Written 15 December 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews. - POOI YUnited States9 contributions4 Stars for the cultural experience:
We had some great positive experiences as follows:
1. we treasured our experience at the village - learning about the culture of the people (Melayu, Chinese, Bidayu, Iban, Orang Ulu, etc.) in Sarawak.
2. we were happy to see many schools taking their students to the village to obtain hands on experience.
3. Must see -- Great performance, especially the hunter dance. Watch for the show time.
5. great food - taste good and unique to the culture.
6. very friendly and helpful staff members at gate.
1 STAR was taken away from the cultural experience because
- Not all facilities were opened all facilities during opening time - 9am to 5pm, we paid a lot to see them and do not want to miss any.
- Not all the major cultures were included in the cultural performance program, e.g., Chinese culture was left out.)
0 STAR for their kitchen and dining hall. Diners please beware of pest (flies) problems at their dining hall. We had negative experience and concerns with the health and safety of their food and pest condition.
They were lots of flies in the dining area. We booked our tickets with lunch and the lunch was already set up (don't know how long before we sat down) before we arrived the dining hall. When we arrived, we were told to sit down where the food was set up and there were many flies flying around or landed on the food and drinks. We were hesitant to consume the food and asked to switch out the food. First, the staff was a little unhappy and didn't understand what we wanted, but they agreed to switch out the food, with the help of a tour guide who spoke their language well (language barrier).
However, we were not sure the food was really changed, or they were just taken into the kitchen and brought back out to us. After we left the village, a few hours after our lunch, we began to have diarrhea! The diarrhea continued for several days, which affected our plans for the rest of our trip, because my husband was dehydrated and got very sick!
They really need do something to ensure food safety - e.g., cover the food, serve food after their guests have sat down, trap or kill the flies to reduce the pest problem and to ensure their guests' health and safety.
0 star for post-sale customer service
I contacted the management four (4) times after our visit and after over 5.5 weeks we still did not receive any response regarding our health and safety concerns. I am very disappointed at their post-sale customer service.
unfortunately, when we tried to take pictures most of the flies flew away and only one or two were captured, and the photos were blurry.Written 17 February 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. So we were in our hiking outfit without any mountain to climb . As such, asked our driver to drop us off at this mountain to hike up the metal road for 5.4km .
It is 30minutes away from Kuching or Mount Santubung so make sure to arrange for transport there and return transport as it is very difficult to get a ride hail there .
Entrance fee is US$4 per foreign person and US$2 for locals . You need to register , log in and log out at the park office . Thereafter hike up 700m to the near peak on a steep mountain road that never seem to flatten . The views from the top is nice and there are benches and covered pavilion to rest enroute . The waterfall route and jungle route is disable if they did not close it off . Otherwise a very good place to workout and hike . Good for a 4 hour hike . It is not Mount santubung, but a little safer to hike in a rainy day which is very common in this area where it rains literally everyday around the year . The only difference is how intense the rain is that they shut the mountains from climbers - especially Mount Sabtubung .Written 1 July 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - 49karenlSudbury, UK137 contributionsBeing very interested in wildlife of all description we opted to visit the Wetlands Park once early morning and then in the evening.
Both trips were enjoyable and interesting for different reasons,
in the morning we saw the Irrawady snub nosed dolphins and a
wonderful specimen of crocodile and in the eveing we were once againl lucky enough to see the dolphins and the proboscis
monkeys. Highly enjoyableWritten 11 June 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Informative but a little expensive - you can get similar info at the Borneo Cultures Museum. Nice to walk up to the fort alongside the waterfall.Written 26 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - msh01San Diego21 contributionsOnly a portion of the area is inside the cave. The rest is more of a jungle walk. Much smaller than Wind Cave. Chittering of bats in complete darkness was a little freaky.Written 26 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Kenten WNorthern California, CA57 contributionsFor bridge lovers. Well designed curvy pedestrian bridge with shape of local Longhorn bird. Nice views of the city, river, floating mosque, and legislature building. Don’t miss the free 8:30PM water light show from the legislature building; the bridge offers a great view of the water light show.Written 2 February 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Both parks are far away, difficult to reach, so very quiet an few people around. Lovely! The trip was well organized by Borneo Adventures, the guides were experienced and the cooks made delicious meals with a lot of vegetables. It was very special!Written 28 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- keely Mleed10 contributionsI have been to many cooking classes in Vietnam, Myanmar and Thailand etc and this one was superb. I find it disappointing that some people like to write such negative comments. The recipes that we were given were ones that we can replicate at home and this is what I would want. Absolutely fantastic, loved it. Highly recommendWritten 6 August 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Annie W5 contributionsTaste of Sarawak: What a great food walking tour with Ren and Kelvin. We walked round all the local streets getting great insights into the local history and culture. They know all the best traditional family food spots for meal (best laksa I've had) plus maybe 8-10 traditional snacks and delicacies. The included sampan trip across the river to try the layered cake at the Kampong was an added bonus. Ren and Kelvin were so friendly and helpful - we didn't expect 2 guides just for the 2 of us! They told us their max group size is 8, to make sure everyone can hear them. Thoroughly recommend this tour which lasted just over 3 hours.Written 15 February 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
