- Rob NesbitWarsaw, Poland4,555 contributionsNanyue King Mausoleum is the tomb of Zhao Mo, second king of the Nanyue Kingdom in the Western Han Dynasty from 206 BC to 24 AD.
I wasn't familiar with this exact time period, but I did know that, of course, China has a lot of ancient history - and I think this museum is a great reflection of that.
Well laid out, both inside and out, we get to see many artifacts from that period, the origins of some of China's old customs (like spirts and wine - China and porcelain - money and trade, for example) and also the way that the Kings and their subjects (the lucky, or unlucky concubines) were buried. Plus their is some remnants of the kings tomb.
I have to say, I was pleasantly impressed with it all - and got a better understanding and appreciation of both Guangzhou's and China's ancient past.

Take your passport, and sidestep any que, with free international visitor entry. They took our lighters on entry, and we were told we could get them back when leaving. Not true. There was a box of old random lighters at the gate, but not our good ones anywhere.Written 5 January 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - KodoDrummerBuenos Aires, Argentina70,639 contributionsThe many exhibits and models on display provide a history of the significant changes in the development of Guangzhou and its people. Guangzhou Museum should not be confused with the Guangdong Museum. Of the two, I prefer visiting the latter.Written 1 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Tanya HGuangzhou, China54 contributionsThis museum is unreal. It’s shaped like a huge metal eye and visually stunning from the outside. We easily bought tickets using the trip.com app and they were inexpensive and easy to use given our limited language ability. They are still in the process of building out the exhibits but they are great ones for young children and school age kids. They have a lot of interactive exhibits including one where you get into an automobile and they (slowly) flip the car over in a simulated roll-over. Mid-day on a Saturday in September the crowds were pretty out of control. If you want to eat a meal the restaurant is crowded and doesn’t have much variety. Also, although it is in the same building, you have to exit the museum and be stamped for re-entry to go there, so we found it to be a bit of a hassle. I would definitely recommend eating before you go or bringing your own food.Written 17 August 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Debby A1 contributionThis museum is easy to find, and worthwhile to tour. The displays and their corresponding explanations are educational as well as a delight to the eye and mind. The friendly and knowledgeable staff offer a comfortable and culturally accurate tour of the varied artistic and utilitarian pieces of various dynasties. You will leave this museum feeling informed and engaged to 5,000 + years of Chinese culture. Be sure to ask Museum Director, Matthew, for a great cup of his coffee!Written 3 March 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - LeonhknyHong Kong, China23,483 contributionsHoused in a restored mansion, Liwan Museum offers a small but interesting collection of traditional Cantonese artworks. The regular exhibition showcases local craftsmanship from portraits to porcelains. The seasonal exhibition is heavily political propaganda. Lots of famous celebrities, and local Chinese celebs too. Some of them look super realistic. Its a nice place to spend a couple of hours and the kids will surely enjoy being here. Ticket prices are not too bad either.Written 11 March 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Rob NesbitWarsaw, Poland4,555 contributionsDidn't know a whole lot about this place before I went but after it all I was very pleasantly surprised.
The place showcases a lot of Chinese culture - from tea, wine, ivory sculptures, porcelain, etc., all with great views of the city from atop of the centre. Also one can walk around the beautifully sculpted gardens, lakes and park and enjoy the relaxed settings.
Lots of Chinese youth were doing their cosplaying and dressing up in traditional and not so traditional garb which was fun to see too.
But also while we were there, there was also a cool performance of traditional drumming and dancing. The place was a hive of activity.
Excellent place to get a better understanding of the history of both Guangzhou and of China, while at the same time enjoying the relaxed surroundings. Can spend many hours here......away from the craziness of the busy streets outside.
