This church is not far from ‘Pupuseria Nenita’, a great place to sample El Salvador’s popular pupusa.

Suchitoto is a hot place so visit the church early or late if possible.

This is a steep hike. It wasn’t too bad b/c the Rocks were dry. The rocks are view unique and the falls are beautiful. There is a place for food and drinks at the top.

We had breakfast here every day on our visit to Suchitoto, and it is a marvelous spot. The food is excellent, and the story of the centro is even better.

We ate lunch down here. It is a nice view of the lake and a fun place to get a drink and some lunch. Our guide took us here. We probably would not have found it on our own.

This is of course the heart of Suchitoto. It’s a hot place so try to visit first thing in the morning or late afternoon.

Visit Pupuseria Nenita to try some pupusa!

Great little museum right in the centre of Suchitoto. The couple who run it have accumulated lots of interesting plates, money and badges from around the world. They were lovely hosts and it only costs 2 dollars. I really nice way of getting out of the sun for half an hour.

This lovely home in the middle of Suchitoto is a must see if you are in this town. The house and courtyards are fabulous and the view from the lower garden of Rio Lempo is really gorgeous. We went without a guide and the cost was 1.00 for nationals and 3.00 for foreigners. The antiques are beautiful and I could have spent an hour just looking at the artwork in the dining room. Alejandro Cotto was a film maker and if you enjoy old Latino cinema there is quite of collection of signed photos from stars. My only wish is that all the pools and fountains would be functional. This would truly be a showstopper with just a bit more maintenance. Visit this house so they can raise the money to do this!

Located in a large house in front of Parque San Martin. The main attraction is a collection of coins and other types of money from El Salvador and from around the world. Most of the items in the currency collection are not in "mint" condition but the variety makes up for it.

I did the walk to this place alone. It took about 1 hour round trip from my hostel (walking reasonably fast). It is fairly steep down and then back up. Short but certainly not for the very elderly.

At the end of the main road going west from town it is not an obvious entrance (a chained gate). There is a gap to enter and if unsure ask the friendly locals. The start of the path down is not obvious. Down just past what looks like a dump - not off the the left.

Follow it down and soon near the top take a left fork (main path goes off slightly to the right). Follow this path all the way down. At the bottom it was confusing. A path was blocked by branches but you could see the river. There were many rotting fruit from the trees here. I made my way to the river and worked my way up river skipping from the many rocks there - dry season so very easy. I guess there is a path but it wasn't obvious.

In any case I made it fine to the bottom of these two small watefalls. Quite cool bit certainly not too impressive. The water is stagnent and there is lots of litter too...

I think there is a path that shows a higher view, but despite trying I could not see it. Go with a guide if you want to be sure - I was happy paying nothing and going it alone - it is a safe area apparently.

Suchitoto is the type of isolated colonial outpost that makes you think about buying an old house and escaping the world there. Since most of us aren't going to do that, just stay at the Casa de la Abuela. It's quirky, lovely, peaceful. Good food and drink given its location. Yes, it may be full of hipsters/euros staring into their laptops....but they're respectful enough, so as not to mar the charms of this place.

I did 5 days of classes here and really felt I improved my Spanish during this time. Prior to me arriving Nelson was really helpful via WhatsApp in answering all my questions. He warmly welcomed me to the school on my first day. The teacher Karilyn was one of the best teachers I’ve had in several years of learning Spanish. She really thought through the planning of the lessons and she has a wonderful way of bringing out the best in you. The location of the school couldn’t be better and the view from the terrace is superb. I much preferred my week here than the one I spent in Antigua at a much larger school. Highly recommended!
